SAVANNAH, Ga. – In what will be the final Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference championship event for a trio of seniors, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore golf team looks to make some noise at the Crosswinds Golf Course in Savannah, Ga. Senior Michael Veverka (Brunswick, Md.), Paul Cecil (Severn, Md.) and Christopher Toney (La Plata, Md.) have each made their mark on the golf program over the past four years as the four have helped resurrect UMES’ golf program.

The three-round championship will be played from April 25-27. The three-day period will begin at 8 a.m., each day and pairings will be announced later today. The Crosswinds Golf Course is a par-72 course with narrow fairways and features five par-5 holes and five par-3s. The course offers TiFeagle greens and has Bermuda fairways.

The championship will feature Bethune-Cookman, Florida A&M, Hampton, Maryland Eastern Shore, North Carolina Central and Savannah State. The winner receives an automatic qualification to the NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Championship. The Division I Men’s Golf Selection Show will air Monday, May 5 at 10 a.m. on the Golf Channel.

Last season, the Hawks placed sixth at the MEAC Showcase in Myrtle Beach, S.C. Veverka led the way with a 15th place finish, while Cecil and Toney claimed 18th and 23rd, respectively. The team shot the best round of any team at the event on the tournament’s final day.

UMES will look to build off its performance at the Florida A&M Invitational, where the Hawks placed fifth amongst seven teams two weeks ago. Freshman Norman Blanco (New Orleans, La.) led the way with a nine-over-par score of 153 to place 16th, while Veverka shot 78, 79 to take 20th.

Veverka has paced UMES on the year with a 75 average and two rounds in the top-10. Sophomore Jon Seward (Ft. Washington, Md.) is three strokes higher at 78, while Blanco sits at 78.40. Cecil has the Hawks’ fourth golfer this season with a six-round score of 81.
