PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – The University of Maryland Eastern Shore golf team begins the spring portion of its 2012-13 schedule this Friday as the Hawks are set to participate in the FAMU Spring Invitational in Tallahassee, Fla. The event will be played at the Southwood Golf Course, which is a par-72 and is 6,654 yards long. The tournament is scheduled to last three days from Friday, March 21 to Sunday, March 24.

UMES has placed fifth in the event in each of the past two seasons, including last season when junior Michael Veverka (Brunswick, Md.) shot a 74 on the final day to finish 11th overall.

Head Coach Marshall Cropper has decided to bring seven Hawks to compete in the event. UMES’ top golfer in the fall, Veverka, will make the trip as will juniors Paul Cecil (Severn, Md.) and Christopher Toney (La Plata, Md.). Veverka and Cecil played in all four fall events, while Toney participated in three.

Freshman Jon Seward (Ft. Washington, Md.) and sophomore Richard Fleming (Upper Marlboro, Md.) will each compete for the second time this year, while senior Sedrick Bailey (Baltimore, Md.) and sophomore Michael Ferguson (Vorhees, N.J.) will make their season debuts on the trip.

Veverka led the Hawks in the fall with an average of 79.00 across eight rounds. Cecil is closely behind Veverka with an 80.13 in eight rounds and Seward is third at 81.50. Toney has the lowest round for the team this year with a two-under-par score of 72 at the Black College Alumni HOF Invitational.
