HOPEWELL TOWNSHIP, Pa. -- Michael Veverka (Brunswick, Md.) and Gregory Raad (Bel Air, Md.) each tied for 23rd place individually as the Hawks took 6th place in the Holiday Inn Colonial Classic.

UMES competed at the Club at Shadow Lakes, a par-72, 6,570-yard course. The team's top four players contributed to the team score.

The Hawks competed in this event last season, improving two strokes as a team from 2010 with a score of 679 (+103). Day one saw the Hawks shoot a 344, bettering their score to 335 on the second round.

Veverka and Raad each got a score of 163 (+19) in the tournament. Veverka had an 85 on the first day, improving to 78 to next round. He was one of only two players in the tournament to shoot an eagle. Raad had the team's strongest first round at 79, finishing with 84 on day two.

Christopher Toney (La Plata, Md.) got 89 and 87 on the two respective days to finish at 176 (+32), taking 35th place. After shooting 91 on the first day, Michael Ferguson (Vorhees, N.J.) improved five strokes to 86 on the final round to get 36th place for a score of 177 (+33).

Richard Fleming (Upper Marlboro, Md.) got 37th place with scores of 124 and 109 to finish 233 (+83).

Tournament host Robert Morris finished in first place with a team score of 600 (+24), edging out runner-up Mount St. Mary's by five strokes. Clarion University's Ross Pringle won the individual competition with rounds of 70 and 73 for a score of 143 (-1).

Next week the golf team returns to the course for the 2011 Donald Ross Intercollegiate, hosted by Appalachian State University.
