PITTSBURGH, Pa.  – The University of Maryland Eastern Shore golf team had three players finish play within the top-20 as the Hawks placed fifth at the 2012 Robert Morris University Colonial Classic in Pittsburgh, Pa., on Tuesday. The event was hosted at The Club at Shadow Lakes, a par-72, 6,570-yard course.

The two-day event saw the team open action with a 330 on Monday, before they registered the fourth-best score on day two. UMES finished with a total of 646 points and had all five of its registered players land top-30 scores. The Hawks were the second-best school at the event in par-3 scoring with an average of 3.43.

UMES was led at the event by junior Gregory Raad (Bel Air, Md.), who shot scores of 81 and 78 to finish in 15th place with a score of 15-over-par (159). Junior Michael Veverka (Brunswick, Md.) tied Raad with a 78 on Tuesday to finish two strokes behind in 16th (161). Junior Paul Cecil (Severn, Md.) continued his dominance of par-3 holes to make it three in a row for UMES with a 17th place finish. He finished the event in a two-way tie for first in par-3 holes with an even score on the eight respective holes.  

Junior Christopher Toney (La Plata, Md.) was the next Hawk finisher with a score of 169. Toney shot an 85 on day one, before he tallied an 84 on the final day. Sophomore Kevin Odell (Snow Hill, Md.) rebounded from a tough first day to shoot a career-high 79 on Tuesday and place 30th overall.

Robert Morris won the event for third consecutive year with a two-round total of 602. St. Francis (Pa.) was second with 610 strokes, while Clarion was third with 625. The Robert Morris White Team was fourth in 629 and followed by UMES and Niagara (648). RMU’s Bo Lustig took home top individual honors with a four-over-par score of 148. RMU’s Brock Pompeani and St. Francis’ Shane Crampton each tied for second with final tallies of 150.



The team will take nearly a month off before they conclude their fall schedule at the Tiger Invitational in Savannah, Ga. The Hawks are set to participate in the two-day event on Saturday, Nov. 10 and Sunday, Nov. 11.
