PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore golf team concluded its 2013-14 season this past weekend as the Hawks placed ninth at the PGA Minority Championships at Wanamaker Course in Port St. Lucie, Fla. The Hawks began the tournament in seventh, before placing in ninth over the last two rounds. The Hawks have placed ninth at the event in two of the past three seasons.

Senior Michael Veverka (Brunswick, Md.) capped a brilliant four-year career at UMES with a 17th place finish of 229. The senior opened with a 75 on day one, before concluding with a 76 and 78 on the final two days. His score on the first day was the sixth time this season that he has shot a 75 or lower round this year.

Senior Paul Cecil (Severn, Md.) carded an 88, 81, and 78 to finish with a score of 248. Cecil was followed by freshman Keun Park (Woodstock, Md.), who was third for the Hawks with 250 points. The tournament was the fourth of the year for Park as he shot an 80 on the opening day and finished the year off with consecutive scores of 85.

Freshman Norman Blanco (New Orleans, Md.) was one stroke behind Park at 251 after shooting 84 and 86 in the first two rounds. He concluded the tournament with his best round of 81. Senior Christopher Toney (La Plata, Md.) ended up with a 266. Toney shot 86, 97, 83 over three days in his last UMES tournament.

Bethune-Cookman won the event with a score of 884 as the Wildcats had four players shot better than ten-over-par. Florida A&M was second with 892, while Alabama State was third in 895. FAMU's Dominick Vennari was the top individual performer (215) with consecutive three-under-par scores of 69 to conclude the event.



The tournament was the final set of rounds in the collegiate careers of Veverka, Cecil and Toney. The three have been valuable members of Hawk golf since 2011 and have grown as student-athletes each season. The event was their fourth and final tournament at Wanamaker Course.
