SAVANNAH, Ga. – Senior Michael Veverka (Brunswick, Md.) was named to the 2014 MEAC Men’s Golf All-Tournament Team after he placed fifth overall at the MEAC Championships to lead the University of Maryland Eastern Shore golf team to a sixth-place finish. The Hawks combined to shoot 1,009 over three rounds of action with Veverka leading the way with three rounds under 76.

Veverka shot a team-best 219 at the event, including Sunday’s final round in which he finished two-over-par at 72. The senior began his final MEAC Championship event with a 76, 73, before he jumped up several places in the standings with Sunday’s strong effort. His finish at the event proved to be his first top-5 finish of the year. The honor also marked his third top-10 finish in 2013-14.

The senior captain was followed in the standings by senior Paul Cecil (Severn, Md.), who finished in 25th with 82, 83, 85 in three rounds. He finished with 250 strokes; good for 34-over-par. Senior Christopher Toney (La Plata, Md.) was 27th overall with two scores of 88 and a 79 on Saturday. Senior Sedrick Bailey (Baltimore, Md.) finished play fourth for the Hawks with a score of 285.

Bethune-Cookman was the champion of the event after totaling 861 points, 15 strokes better than second-place Savannah State. Florida A&M was third with 888 points, while N.C. Central had 913 and Hampton stood at 962. BCU had two players named to the All-Tournament team, including Ryan Fricker, who won the event with a six-under-par score of 210.

The Wildcats also saw Leon Fricker named to the All-Tournament team, while Savannah State had two of its own on the squad in Travis Roe and Brandon Neals. Veverka was the only player to receive the All-Tournament team honors outside of the four from BCU and SSU.



UMES will take off two weeks, before the Hawks begin action in the PGA Minority Championship in Port St. Lucie, Fla., on May 9-11.
