TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – After nearly a month away from the fairways, Coach Marshall Cropper and the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Men’s Golf Team headed south to Tallahassee, Fla. for the 2016 Florida A&M (FAMU) Rattler Invitational. The two-day event took place at the Southwood Golf Course.

After a round of play, Maryland Eastern Shore held the early lead; however, the squad was unable to sustain the momentum as they dropped to third overall. Despite the outcome, UMES’ third-place finish was highest at this event since returning as a D-1 program.

Freshman Blair Waters (Jacksonville, Fla.) led the way as he finished tied for eighth. The Florida native shot a 160 (+17) after two days of work.

Newcomers Darius Davis (Atlanta) and Jordan Stein each had strong debuts, finishing tied for 11th overall after posting a 164 (+21).

Sophomore Demarkis Cooper (Clinton, Md.) ranked tied for 13th, finishing a stroke behind Davis and Stein. Furthermore, the Maryland product reached two milestones as he moved tied for eighth all-time in most events played and most rounds played.

Fellow classmate Timothy Mitchell (Glenn Dale, Md.) also made moves up the program’s D-1 record book in the same categories. As of today, Mitchell is fifth in both groups.

Savannah State (SSU) won the event by six strokes over the Rattlers. Individually, Hampton’s T.J. O’Neal placed first with a seven-stroke win over the Tigers’ Kevin Metzger.

On April 21-23, the Hawks return to Savannah, Ga. for the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Championships.
