TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The University of Maryland Eastern Shore golf team opened up its spring schedule this past weekend as the Hawks placed fifth at Florida A&M Spring Invitational. The invitational was originally scheduled for two days but inclement weather in the upper Florida area shortened the event to just one day of 18 holes. It was the first bit of action for UMES in over four months.

UMES finished the event with a score of 325 at the par-72, Southwood Golf Club. Bethune-Cookman won the event with +2 score of 290, while Alabama State and Florida A&M each finished +17. Savannah State was fifth with a score of 311 and UMES rounded out the top-five at 37 over. A total of seven teams and 34 student-athletes competed in action at the 7,008-yard course.

The Hawks finished with a final score of 325 and had four players record top-30 finishes at the event. Junior Christopher Toney (La Plata, Md.) provided his strongest showing of the season with a ninth-place finish of 76. He was the only Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference golfer from a school other than Bethune-Cookman and Florida A&M to finish in the top-10. His four-over-par round was his second strongest round of the season.

Junior Michael Veverka (Brunswick, Md.) was one stroke behind Toney with a one-round total of 77. The five-over score provided him with a 12th overall finish. Fellow classman Paul Cecil (Severn, Md.) placed 27th with a score of 85, while freshman Jon Seward (Ft. Washington, Md.) was 28th with 87 strokes. Sophomore Michael Ferguson (Vorhees, N.J.) rounded out action for the Hawks with a score of 95, good for 31st overall.

Bethune-Cookman’s Leon Fricker and FAMU’s Travis Roe each tied for first overall with scores of 69 (-3). BCC’s Ryan Fricker was third with an even score of 72, while BCC and FAMU saw Alex Clapp and Justin Stills each record scores of 73 to tie for fourth.

The Hawks will waste no time in returning to action as the team is scheduled to participate in the Whiting-Turner Towson Invitational in Grasonville, Md., on March 31.
