Dec. 21, 2017

Maryland Eastern Shore mens basketball (3-10) closes out the road portion of their nonconference schedule at Drake University (5-7) on Friday night. Tip from the Knapp Center is set for 8 p.m. Eastern Time.

Last Time Out

Eastern Shore closed on a 21-6 run over the final 10 minutes but ran out of time at Iowa State, falling 55-49 on Wednesday night at Hilton Coliseum. Ahmad Frost led all scorers with a career-high 19 points, while Logan McIntosh scored 12 of his 17 points in the final 10 minutes.

Bobby Collins on the Matchup

Drake is a very good basketball team. We have no easy games. We just have to stay focused, stay hungry, and compete. We kind of tasted it [in the Iowa State game]. I felt we were going to play a certain level, and we had the opportunities.

Series History

This is the first-ever meeting between the Hawks and the Bulldogs, who play in the Missouri Valley Conference. Eastern Shore last faced an MVC team when it visited Wichita State on Nov. 20, 2016. The Shockers won 116-79 on the way to a Valley co-regular season and tournament championship, its last before leaving for the American Athletic Conference over this past summer.

Hawk Quick Shots

Senior guard Logan McIntosh has put the load on his shoulders as of late. Over his last five games the Atlanta native has averaged 13.8 points, 4.6 rebounds, 3.8 assists, 1.2 steals, and 36.6 minutes per contest. McIntosh has recovered nicely from the back injury that kept him out for three games in November. All six of his double-digit scoring efforts have come since Nov. 24, including an 18-point outburst at Liberty and 17 points at ISU.

The Hawks have shaken up their starting lineups over the past two games. Senior guard Najee Fitzgerald got his first career start last Friday at Creighton, while freshman guard Sean Hoggs made his first start on Wednesday at Iowa State.

Walk-on freshman Michael Odiana saw his first significant minutes in the second half on Wednesday. The Dracut, Massachusetts native scored his first collegiate points and played spirited defense, helping to fuel The Shores late 12-0 run to get back in the game.

Eastern Shore closes out the nonconference slate at home against Central Penn on Dec. 31. Tip from the Hytche Center is set for 3 p.m. MEAC play opens on Jan. 3 with a showdown at rival Morgan State, while the Hawks play their first home conference game against Hampton on Jan. 6.

About Drake

Drake won four of its first five games this season for new head coach Niko Medved, including a third-place finish at the U.S. Virgin Islands Paradise Jam. Since then, the Bulldogs have fallen back to earth, dropping three straight and six of their last seven. DU was picked to finish last in the MVC preseason poll, nine points behind ninth-place Evansville.

Senior guard Reed Timmer is the leader of The Valley’s best nonconference scoring attack. The New Berlin, Wis. native leads the MVC with 19.3 points per game and a .882 free throw percentage, tossing in 2.7 assists per game for good measure. Timmer has eclipsed the 20-point mark five times, including 32 in a win over Chicago State on Nov. 26.

Niko Medved takes the reins in Des Moines after four successful seasons at Furman. Medved turned a nine-win team in his first season into a 23-win team last year; the Paladins won the Southern Conference regular season championship and advanced to the CIT semifinals. Their boss earned SoCon Coach of the Year honors before leaving to take the job at Drake. Medved brought five freshman into the mold, and his new coaching staff features, amongst others, Northern Iowa legend Ali Farokhmanesh.
