Hakeem Baxter (pictured) was named MEAC Rookie of the Week for the second time in the past three weeks

NORFOLK, Va. – The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference announced its player of the week honors on Monday and University of Maryland Eastern Shore freshman guard Hakeem Baxter (Philadelphia, Pa.) was named Rookie of the Week. The distinction is the third honor of the year for Baxter, who was predicted as Lindy’s Sports MEAC Newcomer of the Year in October. This is the second time that Baxter has recieved the award in the past three weeks.

Baxter collects the award after he scored a career-high 28 points against UMBC, behind a 9-for-19 shooting performance from the floor. The guard was 9-of-10 from the free-throw line and chipped in with three rebounds. He played a game-high 37 minutes and was an instrumental part of UMES’ two big runs in the game. For the season, Baxter leads the team in scoring and is seventh in the MEAC with 17.2 ppg. He is seventh in the conference in free-throws (80%) and is 14th in shooting (49%). Baxter stands in the top-10 with an average of 33 minutes-per-game.

Michael Murray from Coppin State was selected as MEAC Player of the Week, while Norfolk State’s Brandon Goode was named MEAC Defensive Player of the Week. UMES senior forward Troy Snyder (Chicago, Ill) was listed as one of the week’s top performers after he brought down 12 rebounds and eight points against UMBC.

UMES is next in action this Sunday, Dec. 15, when they travel to Oregon State for a 3 p.m. (PT) game. The game is the first of two on the road for the Hawks, who conclude the trip with a bout at Purdue on Dec. 17.
