Bobby Collins on the Matchup

Old Dominion is a very talented team. They shoot the ball just as well [as Tennessee Tech] and they have an inside presence. Well have our work cut out again, but were going to be ready. Were going to get some rest and travel back and compete against Old Dominion.

About Old Dominion

The Monarchs have won at least 18 games in each of Jeff Jones’ first four seasons at the helm. ODU won 27 games in 2014-15 and followed that up in 2015-16 with 25 wins and the Vegas 16 postseason title. After taking a step back last year (19 wins, no postseason), the Monarchs are on the right track to start 2017-18, only losing to Temple on Nov. 16 and then on a halfcourt heave to William & Mary on Saturday.

Junior guard B.J. Stith, one of two sons of assistant coach Bryant Stith on roster, has been a leader for the Monarchs in the early stretch. The Lawrenceville, Ga. native leads the team with 14.2 points per game and is third on roster with five rebounds per contest. Stith earned his program’s Most Improved Award last season after notching 13.6 points and 5.4 boards per game.

Jeff Jones ascended to his alma mater’s head coaching job at age 29 in 1990 and has been part of the coaching establishment ever since. He coached for eight seasons at Virginia, winning the 1992 NIT and making the NCAA Elite Eight in 1995. He then became the all-time winningest head coach in American University history, going 211- 183 in 13 seasons, winning four Patriot League titles and going to the NCAA Tournament in 2008 and 2009. Jones has since turned Old Dominion into a respected mid-major player since taking the reins in 2013.
