NORFOLK, Va. – The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference released its weekly men’s basketball honors on Monday and University of Maryland Eastern Shore freshman guard Hakeem Baxter (Philadelphia, Pa.) was named  MEAC Rookie of the Week. The honor is the second of the year for Baxter, who was named Lindy’s Sports Preseason Newcomer of the Year in October. His selection is the first regular season award for the Hawks.

Baxter’s claims the award after he tallied 22 points, seven rebounds and two assists in UMES’ 78-71 victory over Mount St. Mary’s on Nov. 20. His effort has provided the Hawks with their best record to begin a year in 14 seasons since 1999. The freshman was clutch for the Hawks down the stretch against MSM as he was 7-for-7 from the free-throw line in the final four minutes of play. Baxter finished 12-of-15 from the charity stripe and was second on the team with 31 minutes played.

N.C. Central’s Jeremy Ingram was named MEAC Player of the Week, while Hampton’s Du’Vaugh Maxwell collected Defensive Player of the Week laurels. On the women’s side, UMES sophomore forward Alexis Udoji (Randolph, Mass.) was named Defensive Player of the Week as well.
