PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - It was the official start of another chapter in the history of men's basketball at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) today. The school presented new men's basketball head coach Bobby Collins to the campus community in a press conference held in the arena of the William P. Hytche Athletic Center.

"I have passion. I am driven. I'm going to give you all I have, every day and every night," said Collins after he was introduced by Director of Athletics Keith Davidson.

"My vision for this program is to graduate students, first and foremost," Collins added. "I'm proud of the graduation success rate and we will continue that. Also, we will win championships," he said to an applauding crowd.

The event was kicked-off by Dr. Juliette B. Bell, President of UMES who complimented the program on its academic success. "We already have a number of successes here on the academic front on which to build. Our men's basketball program is ranked #1 among all HBCUs in graduation rates, with a rate of 86%."

But just as everyone assembled wanted to hear, Dr. Bell addressed the issue of winning and expressed her commitment to not only winning in the classroom, but on the court as well. "Everyone here at UMES is committed to developing a winning basketball program, and by winning, I mean both on the court and in the classroom. Coach Collins has a commendable record on both fronts, which is a good fit at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore. We have high expectations for Coach Collins, and we believe based upon his previous experience that he's up to the task."

Davidson continued his praise. "There were a number of things that jumped out about Coach Bobby Collins. First was his basketball knowledge--he's a student of the game. Second was his experience, whether it was as a player, assistant coach or head coach, Coach Collins had a lot of great experiences. One of the best experiences you can have is winning. Wherever he goes, he has won."

Collins addressed winning in a simple fashion. "When we walk around campus, we want to be proud because it's a new day. Our motto is `Win Today'. When we practice and we run drills, we'll win those drills. We will win those small things because winning is contagious, and we'll carry that over into games and competition."

The event featured the ceremonial presentation of the UMES hat and a logoed basketball. It ended with Dr. Bell and Coach Collins cutting a basketball cake, welcoming Coach Collins and giving birthday wishes to the President who celebrated her day on Tuesday.

"I don't want to just come here and help these athletes win games," Collins concluded in his remarks. "I want them to become productive members of society when they leave. I want them to say they got something from Coach Collins. I want them to go and support and provide for their families."

The Hawk family is anxiously looking forward to the start of the Collins era at UMES.
