DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. --There is nothing like the final seconds of a game to ensure your adrenaline hits peak levels. And there is nothing more heartbreaking than to be on the losing end of a 55-54 conference game. That is what happened to the University of Maryland Eastern Shore Saturday at Florida A&M. The Hawks will look to redeem itself Monday at Bethune-Cookman (Jan. 28) at 7:30 p.m.

The Hawks battled from being down 10 points in the second half, to close the gap to three points in the final two minutes. With less than 20 seconds remaining in the game, UMES forced a Florida A&M turnover, and got the ball back with less than 10 seconds on the game clock. Leading scorer, Kevin Mays, took a shot from the right side block, his shot rimmed out into the hands of Troy Snyder, and before Snyder could put the ball back up it was knocked out of his hands.

Princess Anne, Md. -- Gregory Womack recorded a career-high for the University of Maryland Eastern Shore and helped lead the Hawks in the second half, but a slow offensive start for UMES gave Bethune-Cookman the 67-55 win Monday. The Hawks outscored Bethune-Cookman 36-33 in the second half, and shot just shy of 55 percent from the field.

Both teams scrambled for the ball while the clock quickly ticked seconds away until the final horn. Mays finished with a team-high 20 points and contributed 13 rebounds to the Hawks impressive 57-35 rebounding effort.

UMES will head into Monday's game with Bethune-Cookman with a record of 1-14 overall, and 1-3 in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. The Wildcats are two spots ahead of UMES with a record of 7-14, 2-4 MEAC.

Mays and Francis Ezeiru have stepped up for the Hawks, and are leading the team in scoring and rebounds, respectively. Both will be needed against the Wildcats, and with help from Troy Snyder contributing on both ends also, UMES will certainly be in prime position to notch another win to its record.
