DES MOINES, Iowa -

After a back-and-forth first half, Maryland Eastern Shore mens basketball couldnt keep pace with Drake, falling 81-57 to the Bulldogs on Friday night at the Knapp Center.

We were in it for awhile but ran out of gas late, said Hawks head coach Bobby Collins after the game. Were beat up right now, so luckily weve got some time off to recover and get back to the grind and get ready for our conference run.

The two teams went punch-for-punch in a first half that saw six ties and four lead changes. The Hawks (3-11) fell behind 6-0 out of the gate but kept it within one or two possessions over the first 10 minutes. Down 16-14 at the 9:05 mark, Tyler Jones (Atlantic City, New Jersey) muscled a layup down low and hit the ensuing free throw to give The Shore its first lead at 17-16. Jones then hit a three-pointer with 7:36 to make it 20-16, the Hawks largest lead of the game.

The Bulldogs (6-7) got a three-point play from Casey Schlatter to cut the lead to one, then DeAntae McMurray drained a trey to put the Bulldogs back up 22-20. Miryne Thomas (Cleveland, Ohio) tied it again with a layup, and the teams went punch-for-punch until the under-four media timeout came with a 26-26 tie. Drake then closed the half on a 7-2 run, and McMurrays step-back jumper from the right elbow near the buzzer gave the home side a 33-28 lead at the break.

Drake came out of the break and scored eight of the first 11 points, going up 41-33 with a Graham Woodward three-pointer at the 17:14 mark. The Bulldogs soon stretched the lead into double digits for the first time; Reed Timmers three with 12:02 to go made it a 49-36 game.

Eastern Shore would hover between single and double digits for the next six minutes, but the Bulldogs depth finally proved too much to overcome with about five-and-a-half to go. A 12-point lead became 14 and 17, and McMurrays three with 3:23 left pushed the Drake lead to 20 for the first time. The Bulldogs led by as many as 25 down the stretch.

Cameron Bacote (Hampton, Virginia) led the Hawks in scoring with 11 points, including eight in the first half. Ahmad Frost (Cincinnati, Ohio) added 10 points, all coming in the second half after a foul-plagued opening session.

Miryne Thomas notched his second career double-double, scoring 10 points and ripping down 10 rebounds. He is averaging 9.7 rebounds over his last three contests.

Logan McIntosh (Atlanta, Georgia) contributed another all-around effort, scoring eight points to go along with five rebounds and eight assists in a game-high 38 minutes.

Timmer, the Missouri Valley Conferences leading scorer, did not disappoint for Drake, pouring in 21 points with five rebounds and six assists. McMurray scored 16 of his own, while Schlatter added 10 off the bench.

Eastern Shore returns from the holiday break on Sunday, Dec. 31, for a New Years Eve home matchup against Central Penn. Tip from the Hytche Center is set for 3 p.m. Next Sundays game will be broadcast locally on flagship radio station Fox Sports 960 AM WTGM and online at EasternShoreHawks.com.
