Hawks shock host Miners to open Don Haskins Sun Bowl Invitational
Dec. 22, 2016

Final Stats

EL PASO, Texas -

Bakari Copeland (Decatur, Georgia) scored a career-high 27 points and Dontae Caldwell (Santa Ana, California) chipped in 13 points and nine rebounds as the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (2-11) topped host UTEP, 71-66, to advance to the championship game of the Don Haskins Sun Bowl Invitational.

I thought we put a complete game together, Hawks head coach Bobby Collins said. It was a grind out game. It was a game like we experienced against American. It was the same situation and we learned how to win tonight. Everybody made some big plays.

The Hawks will now face Akron (9-3) in Thursday (Dec. 22) at approximately 9 p.m. eastern time or 30 minutes after the conclusion of the consolation game between the Miners and California-Irvine.

Copeland had not only his best game since the opener at George Washington, but also the best of his career.

Bakari finally played like a man for us totally for the whole time that he was in, Collins said. Im just pleased with the focus that we had for 40 minutes.

Copeland played 37 minutes and was 7-of-13 from the field, 4-of-6 from behind the arc and 9-of-11 from the free throw line. He grabbed seven rebounds and his four 3s were also a career high.

Junior Ryan Andino (Fort Lauderdale, Florida) finished with 11 points despite being held scoreless in the first half. He was a perfect 5-of-5 from the free throw line.

I thought the Copeland kid on their team did a really nice job and Caldwell did a nice job, UTEP coach Tim Floyd said. We did a pretty good job on Andino, their second leading scorer, but the start of the second half he knocked down some big baskets and kind of got his head up a little bit.

Caldwell pulled down nine boards, but none were bigger than grabbing Deon Barretts missed 3-pointer with the Hawks holding a 2-point lead with 2:03 left in the game. He then found Derrico Peck (Atlanta, Georgia) open for dunk to make it 65-61.

The Hawks again lost the rebounding battle 44-31, but forced 14 Miners turnovers and coughed it up just six times themselves including once in the first half.

Thats something that we focused on, Collins said. We told them we had to minimize our turnovers and they were big, but we did a very good job defending in the paint.

Games can be heard locally on Fox Sports Radio 960 AM WTGM or on www.EasternShoreHawks.com. Will DeBoer will have the call Thursday at 9 p.m. eastern from El Paso, Texas on The Shore Sports Network.
