The Shore makes late run, falls at American, 61-58

Final Stats


The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (1-11) took a 55-53 lead over American University (3-7) with 3:23 to go in Mondays afternoon tilt. But the Hawks turned the ball over four times in the closing minutes and fell 61-58.

Junior Ryan Andino (Fort Lauderdale, Florida) and sophomore Dontae Caldwell (Santa Ana, California) led the Shore with 13 points apiece and Caldwell also pulled down nine rebounds.

Senior Bakari Copeland (Decatur, Georgia) had nine points and eight rebounds. The Hawks two leading scorers on the season, Copeland (4-of-13) and Andino (3-of-10) finished a combined 30 percent from the field and the Hawks shot 39 percent as a team.

Eastern Shore won the rebounding battle 32-26 for just the second time this season, but turned the ball over 18 times. The Hawks were outscored in the paint 38-24.

The Hawks will next travel to El Paso Texas for the Don Haskins Sun Bowl Invitational where they will face University of Texas El Paso (UTEP) on Wednesday at 9 p.m. eastern. On Thursday, they will face either California-Irvine or Akron, pending Wednesdays result.
