BLACKSBURG, Virginia -

Virginia Tech hit 11 three-pointers in the first half and Maryland Eastern Shore mens basketball could do all it could to hang on, falling 93-40 on Sunday afternoon at Cassell Coliseum.

The Hawks (3-8) got an early post bucket from Miryne Thomas (Cleveland, Ohio) to go up 2-0 in the first minute. Kerry Blackshear, Jr. answered with a layup on the Hokies (9-1) end, then Tyler Jones (Atlantic City, New Jersey) connected on a jumper for The Shore to make it 4-2.

The teams traded blows for the first eight minutes. After Virginia Tech took a 6-4 lead three minutes in, Eastern Shore evened things up at 6-6 and then got back within one on an Ahmad Frost (Cincinnati, Ohio) three to make it 16-15 at the 12:26 mark. The Hawks had the chance to go up on their next possession, but an errant Frost pass ended up in the hands of VTs Justin Robinson, who broke away for an uncontested dunk to make it 18-15.

Robinsons transition jam kicked off an 18-0 Hokie run over the next four minutes, during which Virginia Tech connected on four three-pointers. VT finished the first half shooting an eye-popping 11-for-17 (65 percent) from downtown, building the lead to 54-22 at the half.

After a solid first half from the floor, Eastern Shore went cold in the second, allowing VT to put it away early.

Cameron Bacote (Norfolk, Virginia) made a spot start for an injured Colen Gaynor (Berlin, Maryland) and led the Hawks with 12 points, his best scoring day since an 18-point output at Maryland on Nov. 12. Logan McIntosh (Atlanta, Georgia) and Frost each added seven points.

All five Hawk starters played at least 31 minutes in the game. Bacote and McIntosh led the way with 37 each.

Chris Clarke paced a balanced VT attack with 18 points in 17 minutes off the bench. Nickeil Alexander-Walker added 16, while five other Hokies scored at least nine points.

Virginia Tech came into the game as the top-scoring team in the country at 96.6 points per game. With a 93-point afternoon the Hokies will actually see their average drop by a few tenths of a point.

Eastern Shore next heads out west for showdown with Creighton on Friday. Tip from CenturyLink Center Omaha is set for 8 p.m. Eastern Time. Fridays game will be broadcast locally on flagship radio station Fox Sports 960 AM WTGM and online at EasternShoreHawks.com. Pregame coverage starts at 7:45 p.m. with Will DeBoer on the call for The Shore Sports Network.
