Final Stats

NORFOLK, Va. - Tonight's game for the University of Maryland Eastern Shore men's basketball team can be tabbed as `want-to-forget' as the Hawks recorded various season-low statistics on their way to a loss at the hands of Old Dominion University, 81-39, at the Ted Constant Center.

UMES (2-6) gave up a season-high 64 rebounds (34 in the first half) to the Monarchs, who tallied a total of 35 from Chris Cooper (16), Frank Hassell (10) and Keyon Carter (nine). The Hawks also only shot 25.9 percent (15-for-58) from the floor for the game compared to ODU's 43.2 percent (32-for-74).

"They were a tougher and bigger team than we are," said head coach Frankie Allen. "It's an understatement to say they outrebounded us, their big guys were very intimidating to us. ODU is a really good and really tough team and not just on the boards. They took some very good shots and offensively we played on our heels and didn't get any good shots off."

Tonight's game marked the first time this season that no UMES player scored in double-digits. Senior Freddy Obame Obame (Libreville, Gabon) and junior Dishawn Bradshaw (Baltimore, Md.) each had eight points to lead the Hawks. Redshirt junior Hillary Haley (Oxon Hill, Md.) tallied a team-high seven rebounds in the loss.

The Monarchs struck early and never let up as they held UMES scoreless for the first seven-plus minutes of the game. A basket by Obame Obame in the paint at the 12:36 mark marked the first points of the game for the Hawks and made the score 18-2.

Obame Obame's basket began a 10-2 run for UMES in the next four minutes to bring the score to 20-10.

ODU ran the lead up to 16 points again before the Hawks went on a 6-0 run with under five minutes remaining in the half with two consecutive 3-pointers by Bradshaw. UMES went into the lockerroom down by just 16 at 34-18.

The Monarchs came out of halftime raring to go once again and gradually took the lead to 25 points at 49-24 with 12:55 remaining on the clock. Haley then wowed the crowd with an acrobatic move in the paint to bring the score to 29-25.

A jumper by junior Tyler Hines (Sicklerville, N.J.) at the 10:31 mark brought the Hawks as close as they were going to come at 53-31 before ODU stacked on the points.

UMES' last basket of the game came with 4:01 remaining on the clock with a basket by freshman Michael Spence (Irvington, N.J.).

The Monarch's Trian Illiadis led all scorers with 14 points while Carter and Hassell added in 13 and 12, respectively.

The Hawks continue their road trip with a 7 p.m. contest at Evansville Saturday.
