HINES SHINES AS HAWKS DEFEAT MIDSHIPMEN, 80-72
Dec. 9, 2009
PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - Sophomore Tyler Hines (Sicklerville, N.J.) paced the Hawks as he grabbed a career-high 12 rebounds (nine on the offensive end) and scored a career-high-tying 16 points in his second start of the season as the University of Maryland Eastern Shore men's basketball team topped the Navy Midshipmen, 80-72, Wednesday evening at the W.P. Hytche Athletic Center.
"Everyone worked hard and contributed to this victory," said Hines. "When we come out with the energy and heart that we did, things start coming together to produce wins."
"Tyler has tremendous heart and brings it everyday to practices and games," said head coach Frankie Allen. "He played with extreme poise and confidence this evening, grabbed some huge rebounds and made big plays."
The win snaps a four-game losing streak to the Mids and is the first for the Hawks since an 82-71 victory on December 11, 1993 at Alumni Hall in Annapolis, Md. Prior to the matchup, Navy was 10-2 against Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference teams (the other loss coming to Howard in 2007) and head coach Billy Lange was 3-0 against UMES.
In addition to Hines, three other Hawks scored in double digits with redshirt sophomore Hillary Haley (Oxon Hill, Md.) leading UMES with 20 points, junior Kevin White (Brooklyn, N.Y.) had 11 and redshirt junior Tim Burns (Franklinville, N.J.) with 10. Two other Hawks had double-digit rebounds with senior Neal Pitt (Fort Washington, Md.) and freshman Sean Berry (Irvington, N.J.) each going for 10.
Prior to this evening's contest, only one UMES player grabbed 10 rebounds in a game when junior Freddy Obame Obame (Libreville, Gabon) did so on Nov. 22 against The Citadel.
The Hawks had season high marks in points (80) and rebounds (48) as they improve to 3-5 on the year. They also shot a season-high 42.2 percent from the floor. With the loss, the Mids fall to 4-6.
"The guys had great effort tonight," said head coach Frankie Allen. "Everyone has stepped forward and the past three games have shown me that this team has a lot of character and heart. The effort and energy down the stretch is what brought us this victory."
UMES got off to a 9-3 start with baskets by Haley and Berry before Navy made an 11-point run to go up 14-9 just under 12 minutes into the game. Haley and redshirt freshman Mark Robertson (Lakewood, N.J.) then nailed two 3-pointers to go up 15-14 and would not trail again in the first half.
Another 3-pointer from Haley gave the Hawks a seven-point advantage at 23-16 with 7:03 remaining. A tip-in by the Mids' Romeo Garcia and a 3-pointer by O.J. Avworo brought Navy within two at 23-21 at 5:43. The teams continued to exchange baskets until UMES broke away with just over a minute left with free throws by freshman James Cotton (Pocomoke, Md.) to make it 37-32.
White made a layup as the buzzer sounded to head into halftime with a 41-32 lead.
The Hawks had their largest lead of the game at 45-32 with a layup by Tyler Hines at 19:40 in the second half.
A 3-pointer by the Mids' Chris Harris brought Navy within four at 45-41 at 17:24. Another Harris 3-pointer tied the game at 51-all at 13:59. From that point on, the score would be tied five more times and the lead would change twice.
UMES regained and kept the lead with 2:59 left on the clock with a huge 3-pointer by Robertson. The Mids' continued to feed the ball to Harris with hopes of salvation, but the Hawks' defense would keep him in check as he would go just 0-for-5 for the rest of the game.
Four made free throws by Burns and two by Haley in the final 28 seconds sealed the deal for UMES as they would go on to win 80-72.
Navy's Harris led all scorers with 23 points while sophomore teammate Jordan Sugars brought down 14 rebounds and 19 points of his own.
The Hawks take a week off for final exams before heading back to the Midwest for contests against Wright State (Dayton, Ohio) on Saturday, Dec. 19 and Northern Illinois (DeKalb, Ill.) on Tuesday, Dec. 22.
