ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Despite holding its own for the majority of the game, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore men’s basketball team was unable to stop the Naval Academy in the end, as the Hawks fell to the Midshipmen, 67-59, on Tuesday night. The loss is the first for the Hawks against the Midshipmen in the past four contests. With the decision, UMES drops to 2-3, while Navy moves to 4-3.

UMES found itself down by eight points with three minutes left in the contest.  The Hawks used a 6-1 run over the next two minutes to bring the game to within a single possession, 60-57, with 1:02 left. The push would soon end, however, as the Midshipmen scored seven of the game’s last nine points to run away with the victory.

Senior forward Francis Ezeiru (Enugu, Nigeria) logged his first double-double of the year with 10 points and 10 boards, while junior guard KyRee Jones (Indianapolis, Ind.) notched a team-high 16 points. Freshman guard Hakeem Baxter (Philadelphia, Pa.) recorded his fourth double-digit point total of the year with 15 points, while senior forward Troy Snyder (Chicago, Ill.) had five assists and two steals.

UMES and Navy were deadlocked through the first 10 minutes of action in the first, before the Hawks scored nine unanswered points to take an eight-point lead, 25-17, with six minutes left. Ezeiru notched four points in the spree and came down with several big boards.

After trading scores, a three-pointer by senior guard Louis Bell (Washington, D.C.) gave UMES its highest lead of the night, 28-19, with five minutes left. Navy would then score nine of the game’s next 13 points, including five from Kendall Knorr, to take a 33-32 advantage at half.  Ezeiru led UMES with eight points and six boards at intermission, while Navy’s Worth Smith led all scorers with 10.

Each team was cold to open up the second as the score remained the same through the first four minutes of play. UMES and Navy would engage in an even affair until the 11:46 mark as a rebounded layup by Ezeiru brought the UMES deficit to one, 40-39, with 11:46 on the clock.

The Midshipmen would get hot over the next five minutes as a three by Knorr gave Navy its largest lead of the night, 51-42, to cap an 8-0 run. The Hawks came to life with consecutive three-pointer by Jones to bring the deficit to within four but Navy clung to a 59-51 lead with three minutes left.  Despite making eight of its last nine free-throws, UMES could not close the gap as seven points in the final 22 seconds by Knorr proved to be the difference.

The Hawks will take five days off before they return to action at the University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC) on Monday, Dec. 2 at 7 p.m. The game will be the second of five for UMES on its road trip spanning until the end of December.
