SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - Three Hawks scored in double digits, but it wasn't enough as the University of Maryland Eastern Shore men's basketball team lost to host Missouri State, 70-53, in the Hispanic College Fund Challenge Friday at JQH Arena.

Redshirt sophomore Hillary Haley (Oxon Hill, Md.) and junior Kevin White (Brooklyn, N.Y.) led the Hawks in scoring with 11 points apiece. Sophomore Mark Robertson (Lakewood, N.J.) poured in 10 points of his own. White continues to shell out assists this season as he had six against the Bears.

Freshman James Cotton (Pocomoke, Md.) led UMES in rebounding with six while fellow freshman Sean Berry (Irvington, N.J.) had five.

The game started off slow with the Hawks trailing for the first eight-plus minutes. A layup by Cotton at 10:39 put the visitors up for the first time. A 3-pointer by Robertson at 9:10 gave UMES their largest lead of the game at 16-13. Throughout the first half, the score was tied 10 times while the lead changed six times.

A 3-pointer by redshirt junior Tim Burns (Franklinville, N.J.) at the 1:32 mark sent the teams into halftime with a 26-26 tie.

The Bears jumped out to a five-point lead in the second half before Haley knocked down a 3-pointer. A breakaway dunk by MSU sophomore Kyle Weems (Topeka, Kan.) at the 13-minute mark may have been the momentum shifter in the game.

Four Hawks were in foul trouble throughout the night as Cotton and senior Neal Pitt (Fort Washington, Md.) fouled out within a minute and a half of each other at the 6:30 mark and 5:19 mark. Berry and Robertson each ended the contest with four fouls.

UMES finished 18-for-47 from the field and made just 2-of-8 free throws in the second half, finishing the night at .571 (12-for-21) from the line. The Hawks were outrebounded 42-29.

Weems led all scorers with 16 points and seven rebounds for MSU, who improves to 2-0 on the season.

UMES continues play in the Hispanic College Fund Challenge in Springfield, Mo. tomorrow night against Eastern Michigan at 6:30 p.m. EST.
