Final Stats

WICHITA, Kansas - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (0-4) entered Sundays game at Wichita State (4-0) getting outrebounded by nine a game and facing a strong rebounding Shockers squad.

Rebounding turned out not to be the big problem at the Roundhouse, because the Shockers barely missed any shots in a 116-79 victory.

Wichita finished the contest at 66 percent from the field and was shooting more than 70 percent until the final minutes of the game. They shots 62.5 percent from behind the arc (15-of-24) and were 31-of-43 from the free throw line (72.1 percent).

Wow! What do I say about a team like that? Hawks coach Bobby Collins said. They had the depth. They had the size. They shoot the ball. It wasnt like there wasnt a hand in their face. Its a very good team. They should be ranked in the Top 25. Im sure at some point they will be.

The Shockers got out to a 62-37 lead by the half spoiling a 21-point first-half performance by sophomore Ryan Andino (Fort Lauderdale, Florida), which already had topped his career high by the break after coming off the bench for the first time this season.

It definitely made him a lot more assertive, Collins said. It made him a lot more focused.

Andino would go on to add six more points in the second half finishing with a career-high 27 including 8-of-10 from behind the arc.

But Wichita wasnt done either, putting up 54 points in the second half. Six Shockers finished in double digits and 10 played at least 14 minutes in the contest, while 16 players saw the floor and the bench scored 64 total points.

Im proud of my guys, Collins said. We fought. We gave a great effort to put 79 points on the board against a very good defensive team especially. We have to find a way. We still have to hustle and grind and get some defensive stops. That is something Im sorely wanting for this team. We have got to be able to defend and we have to do a better job defending.

The Shockers did win the rebounding battle 32-25, but the 57 combined rebounds were a season low for an Eastern Shore game this season. There were 71 at George Washington, 80 at home against UMBC and 82 at Boston College.

Tonight it wasnt rebounding because the shots were going in, Collins said. That is a very good team and our guys did a very good job offensively, but we have to do better defensively. We are preparing to play in March. We are preparing to get ready for our conference schedule. Hopefully, we can continue to find that offensive output, but also put out a better defensive effort.

Logan McIntosh (Atlanta, Georgia) added 15 points for the Hawks off the bench. Deven Dorsett (Lithonia, Georgia) and Dontae Caldwell (Santa Ana, California) led the Hawks in rebounding with four each. Thomas Rivera had seven points and a team-high five assists. The Shore bench outscored the starters 64-15.

The Hawks will next play Colorado state before finishing off the 11-day road trip in Louisiana.

It doesnt get any easier, Collins said. Colorado State is a very good team. Louisiana Tech is a very good team. Southeast Louisiana is a very good team. It doesnt get any easier for us. Were just going to have to go out and play and give our best effort. Like I told the guys: If they give me 100 percent effort, Ill take whatever happens. They gave me effort tonight. We just didnt play smart in some defensive possessions. They picked us apart versus our zone. They run a lot of good stuff. When we did defend, they went through us, because they were so much physically tougher and stronger.
