PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - Juniors Dishawn Bradshaw (Baltimore, Md.) and Tyler Hines (Sicklerville, Md.) combined for 35 points as the University of Maryland Eastern Shore men's basketball team defeated Division III Kean University, 86-68, for their first win of the season Saturday afternoon at the W.P. Hytche Athletic Center.

"We started slow, but we came out with a lot of energy," said Hines. "I did everything I could and worked hard for my team to get our first win of the season."

Redshirt junior Hillary Haley (Oxon Hill, Md.) and redshirt senior Tim Burns (Franklinville, N.J.) joined in the double-digit club with 16 and 10 points, respectively.

"It was a good win for us and it was no walk in the park, and never will be, regardless of the division of our opponent," said head coach Frankie Allen. "We played well for the most part and the guys off the bench put in great effort this afternoon."

UMES started the game on an 11-2 run going into the first media timeout at the 15:45 mark, with the lone Kean basket coming on a goal-tend call. The Hawks held the Cougars to only free throws until the 14:33 mark with a layup by Jonathan Jones to make the score 11-6.

With just under ten minutes to go, Kean tied the game 17-17 before taking a six-point lead. Haley hit a long 3-point basket coming out of the under-four media timeout to come within three at 29-26.

The Hawks took the lead at 34-33 with a three-point play by Haley at the 1:30 mark. Haley was fouled once again and this time made a four-point play with a basket from the corner to put UMES up 40-36 going into halftime.

The teams battled back and forth for the first part of the second half before UMES took the lead for good at 56-55 with 9:53 remaining in the game off of a free throw by junior Diyaaldin Kelley (Philadelphia, Pa.).



The Hawks made a 19-7 run during this period before a layup by Robert Lewis with 4:04 remaining in the game made the score 72-61. The seven points by the Cougars were all off of free throws.

With 3:18 on the clock, Bradshaw drove to the middle of the lane and hit a floater while being fouled to make a three-point play to go up 75-62.

UMES scored a total of nine points within 45 seconds to make the score 84-65 with baskets by Burns, Haley and Hines. Senior Josh Bright (Salisbury, Md.) made a layup with 19 seconds left on the clock before Jones hit a 3-point basket to register the final score of 86-68.

Kean's Jones registered a game-high 31 points and 20 rebounds.

The Hawks host Northern Illinois on Wednesday at 1 p.m. at the W.P. Hytche Athletic Center. There will not be any admission charges for this matchup.
