COLLEGE PARK, Maryland -

Maryland Eastern Shore men’s basketball dropped a 96-43 decision to the University of Maryland on Sunday night at Xfinity Center.

“Our guys gave it their best,” said Hawks head coach Bobby Collins. “That’s a very good basketball team, and they exposed us tonight. Hopefully we can get back healthy, get all our troops out on the floor again soon.”

The Hawks dressed just nine players for the game. Senior guard Logan McIntosh (Atlanta, Georgia) sat out after suffering a minor back injury on Friday night against Valley Forge. Freshman forward Miryne Thomas (Cleveland, Ohio) is still recovering from a concussion.

Cameron Bacote (Hampton, Virginia) hit the first bucket of the game two minutes into the first half, giving the Hawks a temporary 2-0 lead. The Terrapins seized it a minute and a half later on a Dion Wiley trey and never looked back.

The Shore kept pace at the beginning of the first half, maintaining a 18-11 deficit at the second media timeout. Preseason All-Big Ten selection Justin Jackson then hit a pair of free throws coming out of the huddle, igniting a 24-7 run to close the first half.

Maryland poured it on from there, increasing their lead to a game-high 53 by the final buzzer.

Bacote followed up a stellar debut on Friday with a team-high 18 points, shooting 8-of-17 from the floor. The freshman also dished out three assists and played all 40 minutes.

Ahmad Frost (Cincinnati, Ohio) and Tyler Jones (Atlantic City, New Jersey) each scored seven points, while Colen Gaynor (Berlin, Maryland) added six and gathered a team-best seven rebounds in the midst of a significant Terrapin size advantage.

Anthony Cowan, Jr. paced the Terps on the offensive end, scoring 16 points with nine boards. Jared Nickens added 15 off the bench, while Dion Wiley poured in 13.

Eastern Shore will regroup and hit the road again for a showdown at St. Bonaventure on Wednesday night. Tip from the Reilly Center is set for 7 p.m. with a pregame show at 6:45. The game can be heard locally on Fox Sports 960 AM WTGM or online at EasternShoreHawks.com. Will DeBoer will have the call on The Shore Sports Network.
