PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) men's basketball team cruised to a 75-35 exhibition win over Division III Swarthmore College in front of 2,069 at the William P. Hytche Athletic Center Tuesday.

Freshman guard Chris Conner (Powell, Tenn.) scored a game-high 21 points and grabbed three rebounds and junior Neal Pitt (Fort Washington, Md.) collected a double-double with 14 points and 18 boards.

Another freshman, Tyler Hines (Sicklerville, N.J.) chipped in with four points and 10 boards.

"I thought we played hard, played with a lot intensity, we had structure and discipline," said UMES first-year head coach Frankie Allen. "We had jitters early, I thought. We missed some shots we normally make, missed some free throws, but our defense was solid for the most part.

"I saw more good things [than bad] ... I feel very encouraged," said Allen.

The Hawks held the lead throughout, scoring 18 of the first 22 points of the game to open an 18-4 lead with 10:03 to play on a pair of free throws by Pitt.

Swarthmore got as close as eight on a 3-pointer from Marc Rogalski with less than six minutes remaining in the half, but UMES was able shut the Garnet out for the rest of the half and pushed the lead to 36-14 at the break.

The Hawks shot 48.3 percent from the field in the opening 20 minutes and had 10-point advantage in points in the paint.

The floodgates opened in the second half as the Hawks opened a 22-point margin at 45-23 with 13:45 left in the game. Conner then hit another three to cap 13-1 run for a 58-24 lead midway through the half.

With the game firmly in control, Sammy Obetoh (Brooklyn, N.Y.) finished it off the game with an exclamation point on a spectacular two-handed dunk in the final 24 seconds of play.

UMES heated up from the floor in the second half, shooting 54.8 percent from two-point range and 40 percent from three.

Senior Raul Ordonez led Swarthmore with eight points and five rebounds.

UMES opens the regular season on the road at Stony Brook Nov. 14 at 7 p.m.
