Hawks Outlast Captains in Exhibition
Nov. 2, 2017

Ahmad Frost (Cincinnati, Ohio) hit four free throws inside the final minute as Maryland Eastern Shore men’s basketball held off a scrappy Christopher Newport squad, beating the Captains 61-58 in Thursday night’s exhibition game at the William P. Hytche Athletic Center.

“That team was no slouch,” said Hawks head coach Bobby Collins after the win. “We’re a little shorthanded, but we have to learn how to play without those guys. I’m just glad we pulled out the win.

“We have to get better. There are some things we need to get better at, and honestly we just need to trust the system. Right now you have six new guys out there who just don’t know. But we made some big plays down the stretch and I’m glad we pulled it out.”

Down 58-57 with under a minute to play, Frost drew contact down low. The sophomore strode to the free throw line and calmly hit both shots, swinging the game in Eastern Shore’s favor with 42 seconds left. With the Captains on the attack, freshman guard Sean Hoggs (Lawrenceville, N.J.) strode in and stole the ball on the perimeter. The ball caromed to Logan McIntosh (Atlanta, Georgia), who drew an intentional foul with 24 seconds remaining.

McIntosh missed both shots and CNU had a chance to pull off the stunner, but freshman forward LeAndre Thomas (St. Petersburg, Florida) dove for a loose ball in the backcourt. Frost came up with the ball and headed back to the charity stripe after another foul, where he sank two more free throws to make it a three-point game. Jason Aigner’s last-ditch three fell short, setting off a sigh of relief from the 2,036 Hawk faithful.

Frost led The Shore with 12 points on 3-of-7 shooting, including 2-of-3 from beyond the arc. He also added four rebounds and dished out two assists.

“It’s still going to take him some time to get comfortable,” said Collins of Frost, who had not played in a game since January 2016 due to injury. “Remember, we had a five-game winning streak before he went out two years ago. He’s going to be fine.”

Christopher Newport took a 33-31 lead into the locker room after a sloppy first half that saw the two teams combine for 21 turnovers. The Division III outfit from Newport News, Virginia, came out of the break strong, though. Tyler Femi’s layup with 17:07 to play capped a 10-0 spurt that saw the Captains go up 43-31.

Through sheer athleticism, however, the Hawks would whittle away the deficit and get back into the game. A 45-35 hole at 13:51 turned became just 50-47 after a Frost trey at 8:32. Eastern Shore finally drew even two minutes later when a pair of free throws from Tyler Jones (Atlantic City, New Jersey) made it 52-52. The Hawks took their first lead of the second half with a pair of foul shots to make it 54-52 with 5:32 to play.

The two sides jostled for position over the final five minutes. All-American guard Marcus Carter tied it at 56-56 with a layup with 1:53 to play. Colen Gaylor (Berlin, Maryland) put the home side back up at 1:12, hitting one-of-two free throws, but Carter responded with a pair from the stripe to make it 58-57 with 54 seconds left, setting up Frost’s heroics and the late defensive stands.

Jones, McIntosh, and freshman Cameron Bacote (Hampton, Virginia) each scored 10 points for the Hawks, while LeAndre Thomas chipped in eight and added eight boards and two blocks to boot.

Carter paced the Captains with 17 points on 5-of-12 shooting and pulled down seven rebounds. Spencer Marin added 16 from the post, and Savonte Chappell came off the bench for six points and five boards.

The Hawks got outshot by their guests, hitting just 35.1 percent of shots (20-of-57) to the Captains’ 38.9 percent (21-of-54), but made up the difference at the free throw line. Eastern Shore shot 12-of-17 (70.6 percent) from the stripe in the second half to CNU’s 3-of-6. The Shore also kept their turnovers under control in the second half and forced 12 opposition TOs.

Eastern Shore now turns its attention to the regular season. The Hawks open the curtain on 2017-18 on Friday, Nov. 10 when the University of Valley Forge visits the Hytche Center. Tip is set for 8 p.m. with a pregame show at 7:45. The game can be heard locally on Fox Sports Radio 960 AM WTGM or on EasternShoreHawks.com. Will DeBoer and Dave Byrd will have the call on The Shore Sports Network.
