Princess Anne, Md. -- Gregory Womack recorded a career-high for the University of Maryland Eastern Shore and helped lead the Hawks in the second half, but a slow offensive start for UMES gave Bethune-Cookman the 67-55 win Monday. The Hawks outscored Bethune-Cookman 36-33 in the second half, and shot just shy of 55 percent from the field.

Womack had a career-high 12 points on 4-of-8 (.500) shooting from the field. All of Womack's points came from behind the three-point line. Womack made a three pointer with 10:34 remaining in the second half to bring the Hawks within eight points (46-38), and lead what seemed to be a comeback for UMES.

Seconds later Ronald Spencer would score from inside the paint to bring UMES within six points (48-42), and its lowest deficit of the game. Spencer finished with 12 points, a team-high seven rebounds and had two blocks. Following two possessions by Bethune-Cookman the Hawks would trail by double digits again. However, Spencer would get a block inside the paint to give UMES a momentary spark.

Teammate Tyler Hines also recorded two blocks for the Hawks and started the game with UMES' first points. Hines, like Womack made plays that would not show up in any statistical category. Hines finished with 11 points and second in rebounds with six.

Ishaq Pitt was busy for the Hawks at the free-throw line making a game-high 7-of-9 (.778), and contributing to the Hawks 28 points scored in the paint. Pitt shot just shy of 40 percent from the field. UMES shot 44 percent from the field for the game, with a second half percentage of 55 percent.

The Hawk defense, which out-rebounded Bethune-Cookman 31-26, held the Wildcats to just seven second chance points. UMES hurt itself making 20 turnovers, allowing Bethune-Cookman to score 29 points. In comparison, UMES forced just 12 turnovers to score 14 points.



UMES will have a few days off before traveling to North Carolina Central (Jan. 28), then to North Carolina A&T (Jan. 28) to continue its Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference schedule.
