WASHINGTON, D.C. – The University of Maryland Eastern Shore men’s basketball team was unable to stop a vicious offensive assault on Saturday night as the Hawks were defeated by Howard, 88-55, in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference play. The loss is the fourth consecutive for the Hawks at Burr Gymnasium. With the loss, UMES falls to 2-14, 0-4 MEAC, while Howard goes to 4-15, 2-2 MEAC.

The Hawks jumped out to a 5-2 lead three minutes into the game after a three-pointer junior Isaac Smith II (Chicago, Ill.). Howard would go on a quick push to take over the lead, but a free-throw by senior Troy Snyder (Chicago, Ill.) evened the score at 8-8 at the 15:19 mark. It would be all Howard for the next six minutes of play, as the Bison used a 17-1 push to take a 16-point lead, 25-9, with just over nine minutes to go.

Howard extended its lead to over 20 points minutes later and held a 52-24 lead at intermission.

UMES scored just six points over the first five minutes of the second as the Bison continued to extend their lead. The men would go on score 25 points the rest of the way, as an aggressive HU offensive attack proved to be too much to handle. Despite shooting 47-percent from the floor in the second-half, the Hawks allowed Howard to go 14-for-18 from the charity stripe.

UMES was led by junior KyRee Jones (Indianapolis, Ind.), who had a team-high 13 points on a 4-for-10 effort from the field. Jones chipped in with three assists as well, while junior Ishaq Pitt (Brooklyn, N.Y.) had eight points and six boards. The Hawks were outrebounded 38-27 and shot just 59-percent from the free-throw line.

Howard saw James Daniel score a game-high 33 points and Tyler Stone record a game-high seven boards. Prince Okoroh had 19 points with six rebounds and three assists. Howard went to the free-throw line 33 times in the game and recorded 11 assists altogether.

The men will stay on the road for their next contest as they head south to Dayton Beach, Fla., to take on Bethune-Cookman on Saturday, Jan. 25 at 4 p.m.
