SAVANNAH, Georgia -

Savannah State burned rubber early in the second half, leaving Maryland Eastern Shore mens basketball in the dust 87-59 on Saturday night at Tiger Arena.

Theres not much we can do when we guard the three and they can drive right around us, said Hawks head coach Bobby Collins after the defeat. For some reason today we were a step slow. I dont know the reason why, but weve got to do a better job defending.

The Hawks (5-14, 1-3) scored the first six points and jumped out to a 12-2 lead in the first four minutes, but the Tigers (5-13, 2-1) worked their way back at the end of the half and took a 35-34 lead into the break on a three from Alante Fenner.

SSU then burst out of the gate in the second half, opening on a 14-4 clip in the first seven minutes to stretch the lead to 51-40. Eastern Shore got no closer than eight the rest of the way, and the Tiger lead started ballooning over the final 10 minutes with a barrage of three-pointers. Savannah States 28-point lead to end it matched their largest of the game.

Javaris Jenkins paced a balanced Tiger attack, scoring 17 points with five of SSUs 15 treys for the game. Fenner notched a double-double off the bench with 15 points and 11 rebounds and dished out six assists to boot.

Zach Sellers also had 15 points, while Jahir Cabeza and Dexter McClanahan added 13 and 12, respectively.

Tyler Jones (Atlantic City, New Jersey) led the Hawks with 20 points, the only Shore player to score in double figures.

Miryne Thomas (Cleveland, Ohio) scored seven points and hauled in a career-high 16 rebounds, the most for any Hawk since Mike Myers chased down 16 boards against NJIT on Jan. 7, 2015.

The Hawks shot a 45.2 percent (14-of-31) in the first half before cooling off to shoot just 31 percent (9-of-20) in the final 20 minutes.

Known for overwhelming opponents with sheer shot volume, the Tigers took an eye-popping 79 field goal attempts (34-of-79), including 48 from three-point range (15-of-48).

Eastern Shore continues its southern swing on Monday night at South Carolina State. Tip from SHM Memorial Center is set for 7:30 p.m. Mondays game will be broadcast locally on flagship radio station Fox Sports 960 AM WTGM and online at EasternShoreHawks.com. Pregame coverage starts at 7:15 p.m. with Will DeBoer on the call for The Shore Sports Network.
