Hawks split road trip with loss at North Carolina Central

DURHAM, North Carolina -

The University of Maryland Eastern Shore hung close to host North Carolina Central cutting within six points (56-50) with 5:08 remaining, but the Eagles closed the game on a 13-2 run and finished on top by a 69-52 score.

The Hawks (4-13, 1-1 MEAC) actually led (20-19) as late as the 8:41 mark of the first half, but the Eagles (10-6, 1-1 MEAC) grabbed the lead on possession later and never gave it up.

Senior Bakari Copeland (Decatur, Georgia) led The Shore with 13 points and nine rebounds, while sophomore Isaac Taylor (Wachapreague, Virginia) chipped in a season-high 12 points and four boards in 25 minutes.

Junior Logan McIntosh (Atlanta, Georgia) added six assists and six points.

Centrals leading scorer Patrick Cole was help partially in check by the Shore going 3-of-10 from the field finishing with 14 points and eight boards thanks to an 8-of-8 from the free throw line.

It was redshirt senior guard Dejuan Graf who did a lot of the damage for the Eagles with 25 points and nine rebounds.

NCCU won the rebounding battle 37-33 and the Hawks turned the ball over 18 times, while the Eagles coughed it up just 12 times. Central scores 32 points in the paint and 19 points off Hawk turnovers.

Eastern Shore struggled from the field shooting 36 percent one game after a season high 58 percent at North Carolina A&T State. The Hawks were also 5-of-21 (24 percent) from behind the 3-point arc.



Next on the schedule for The Shore is a Jan. 14, 4 p.m., home battle against Howard University (3-13, 0-1 MEAC), which had been playing without 2015-16 MEAC Player of the Year James Daniels because of an injury. Daniels returned to the court with 24 points Jan. 4 in a loss to Florida A&M and then put up 10 at Columbia on Jan. 7.
