PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – The University of Maryland Eastern Shore baseball team held off a resilient comeback by its former alumni to post a 5-4 victory at Hawk Stadium on Saturday afternoon in the annual Alumni Baseball Game. UMES had eight student-athletes hit safely on the day and saw its pitching staff combine to fan six opposing batters.

The Hawks held a 5-1 lead in the top of the ninth, but the alums saw five of their first six hitters reach base safely. With one out, Shaquille Bagwell walked and was plated after Assistant Coach John O’Neil ripped a double into left-center. Assistant Coach Luis Mena followed with another double to score O’Neil, before Tre-von Johnson singled through the left side to bring in another run and make it 5-4.

UMES junior Michael Epps (Pottstown, Pa.) would regroup and thwart the rally after coaxing a fly out to end the game.

The Hawks were led offensively by senior Jeffrey Fleetwood (Delmar, Del.), who was 1-for-2 with two RBIs and one run scored. Freshman Chris Adams (Brentwood, Md.) was hot with the stick as well with a 2-for-3 performance from the plate with one RBI. Senior Byron Campbell (Waldorf, Md.) tripled and reached base three times.

The alumni saw a fantastic performance from Mena, who went 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI. Johnson had two hits and two RBI, while O’Neil reached base three times and Bagwell was on twice. UMES Athletic Hall of Fame members, Kirkland Hall and Marvin Blye, each participated in the event with Hall walking once as a DH and Blye clubbing a deep single to left-center.

The alumni sent former Hawk, Jesus Hernandez, to the bump to start the game, but after his two innings the current Hawks used eight pitchers to finish the contest. Sophomore Will Turley (Greensboro, Md.) threw two scoreless frames to pick up the win, while senior Bernard Parker (Waldorf, Md.) and freshman Jesse Stinnett (Madison Heights, Va.) were impressive in four innings.

The Hawks will now gear up for their annual Scout Day next Saturday, Oct. 26, at 1 p.m.
