HAWK TALK: A WEEKLY RECAP OF UMES ATHLETICS (JUNE 2ND THROUGH 8TH)
June 9, 2014
PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – This week’s Hawk Talk edition features UMES Athletes of the Week, baseball & bowling news, and more.
Slow news this week, but summer is almost here! So let’s get to it:
A couple months ago, former University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) baseball student-athlete Tyler Love was honored as one of the Graduate Students of the Year at Virginia Polytechnic and State University (Virginia Tech) in Blacksburg, Va. In 2009, Love graduated Summa Cum Laude from UMES and played three seasons on the baseball team.
“Bottom line – I would not be where I am at today without my experience as a student-athlete at UMES,” said Love. “There are many valuable lessons that I learned during my career there, and I have used them to overcome various challenges throughout my life.”
The baseball team finished 13-35 overall (8-15 MEAC) and saw 10 student-athletes named to the 2014 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) All-Academic Baseball Team.
Last Thursday (06/05), UMES women’s bowling star Megan Buja (Rockford, Ill.) was named to the 2014 Capital One Academic All-America® Division I First-Team. This is the second consecutive year earning the prestigious distinction.
Earlier this season, Buja along with four other Hawks received National Collegiate Bowling Association (NCBA) All-Academic Awards.
On April 17th, the Hawks wrapped up their season by finishing in fifth-place at the United States Bowling Congress (USBC) ITC.
MEN’S OUTDOOR TRACK & FIELD
Last Monday (06/02), men’s track & field Dillon Simon (Pottersville, Roseau, Dominica) was named UMES Peninsula Regional Medical Center (PRMC) Athlete of the Week, alongside Gayon Evans (women’s track & field), for his efforts at the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Preliminaries in Jacksonville, Fla.
Simon wrapped up his junior season by setting a new school-record in the meter-throw with 56.92.
WOMEN’S OUTDOOR TRACK & FIELD
On June 2nd, women’s track & field Gayon Evans (Clarendon, Jamaica) won UMES PRMC Athlete of the Week, along with Dillon Simon (men’s track & field), after her performance at the NCAA Preliminaries. Evans was the lone Hawk to earn the right to participate in the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Ore. by qualifying in the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes.
NCAA Championships begin June 11th.
