HAWK TALK: A WEEKLY RECAP OF UMES ATHLETICS

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – There was minimal action for the University of Maryland Eastern Shore athletics program this past week, as just one team participated in competition. At the conclusion of the week, just two teams had action remaining on their schedule as the baseball team concluded its season after a valiant run in the MEAC Tournament.
Let’s take a look at action from this past week:
The baseball team went 2-2 this week.
The men opened up play in the MEAC tournament on Thursday with a 13-5 victory over North Carolina Central in the opening round of the event. Senior Jacob Foreman (Little Orleans, Md.) picked up his sixth win of the year with nearly six innings of five-hit ball. UMES had five players notch multiple hits games, including junior catcher Brandon Schott (Warren, Pa.) who went 4-for-5 with two RBIs.
The Hawks, who held the No. 3 seed from the North, would go on to pin a 7-6 decision over Delaware State on Friday. Sophomore Zachary Saca (Elk Grove, Calif.) threw four innings and fanned four to pick up his fourth win of the year. His outing gave him just under seven innings on the hill in the first two games as he allowed just one run and had eight strikeouts altogether.
The Hawks had two players notch three hits in the game in sophomores Stephen Bull (Millsboro, Del.) and Byron Campbell (Waldorf, Md.). Bull hammered a decisive triple in the ninth to score the eventual winning run. UMES finished with 12 hits in the event.
UMES saw senior Karim Gonzalez (Mexico City, Mexico) fan a career-high 11 in Saturday’s game against top-seeded Bethune-Cookman. The Hawks would fall in the contest, 3-0, but senior James Newsome (Mechanicsville, Md.) would tally two hits. UMES concluded its season later in the day when Delaware State defeated the Hawks, 7-2. The Hawks had two players notch three hits in Campbell and junior Tre-von Johnson (East New Market, Md.).With the loss to DSU, UMES concluded its season with a record of 14-39. The record was the best for a Hawk baseball team since 2006.
The men had three players named to the All-Tournament Team in Gonzalez, Campbell and Bull. The team also featured six players on the MEAC All-Academic Team in Bull, Foreman, Gonzalez, Newsome, senior Tyler Witte (Westminster, Md.) and sophomore Jordan McDougal (Oxon Hill, Md.).
Gonzalez’s performance also credited him with the distinction of PRMC UMES Athlete of the Week for the week of May 22. The article can be viewed here.
Sophomore Megan Buja (Rockford, Ill.) was named to the Capital One Academic All-District II Team. She was a First-Team selection in the University Division for women's at large teams.
Buja, the 2012 United States Bowling Congress (USBC) Star of Tomorrow Award recipient has had a perfect collegiate career so far, carrying a 4.0 in the classroom and winning the NCAA National Championship in both years at school. This season she won the Elite 89 Award (the NCAA's highest academic honor) as well as being named the University's Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year. She was also an All-MEAC selection.
The National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) announced their 2012 Hall of Fame Class and Nelson Townsend, a 1962 graduate of then Maryland State College and Athletics Hall of Famer from the now named, University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) was honored. He is one of seven new members to be inducted.
The Hawks also announced that the Art Shell UMES Celebrity Golf Tournament will return to the Eastern Shore on June 13. Tee off begins at 8 a.m. at Great Hope Golf Course in Westover, Md. The event is being run to raise funds for student scholarships.
UPCOMING WEEK (MAY 21-27)
Aside from the men’s and women’s outdoor track teams, all other spring sports programs have completed action for the 2012 year.
The men’s and women’s teams will send 10 runners to the NCAA Preliminaries in Jacksonville, Fla., beginning on Thursday, May 24. Junior Lenora Guion-Firmin (La Trinite, Martinique), senior Cynthia Anais (Martinique, France), senior Vanessa Henry (Capital Heights, Md.) and sophomore Geranda Williams (Waldorf, Md.) were named as qualifiers for the women's team.
The men's team will see junior Ackeem Smith (St. Catherine, Jamaica), junior Andre Walsh (St. Catherine, Jamaica), sophomore Marcus Wallace (Wintergreen, Fla.), junior Zavior Brown (Middletown, Md.), sophomore Rico Taylor (Silver Spring, Md.) and sophomore Owen Cain (Montgomery Village, Md.) all in action as well.
