Bull's consecutive hit streak fell just four shy of the NCAA record

April 14, 2014

PRINCESS ANNE, Md.—Senior baseball outfielder Stephen Bull (Millsboro, Del.) and senior bowler Megan Buja (Rockford, Ill.) have been named the University of Maryland Eastern Shore Peninsula Regional Medical Center Athletes of the Week for the week ending April 15th. Bull is being named for the first time this year, while Buja is being named for the second time this year.

Bull led the Hawks baseball team in the offensive department in five games this past week. Starting with his final at-bat in the road portion of the home-and-home series against Navy, Stephen reached base in eleven straight appearances at the plate, collecting 10 singles and a walk in that span. The 10-for-10 span (the walk does not count as an at-bat) fell just four shy of the NCAA record set by Larry Peterson of Gonzaga in 1977. With that effort, Bull raised his average to a team high .336 as the Hawks went 3-2 during the week against Navy and Norfolk State.

Buja shined in the Hawks’ third place finish at the NCAA Championships this past weekend in Cleveland, Ohio, particularly in team games. In seven individual games, Buja knocked down a total of 1628 pins in seven games, earning an average of 232.6 pins per game. That average ended up as the highest among all the bowlers from the eight schools eligible to compete at the Championships. Buja also had a game high of 279 during the tournament, just one shy of her season high of 280.

Bull and the rest of the Hawks will travel to Lehigh tomorrow before a weekend matchup with Delaware State on Friday and Saturday in Dover, while Buja and the Hawk bowling team will get a second chance to earn their sixth national championship in six years at the USBC Championships in Reno, Nevada.
