UMES RENEWS OLD RIVALRIES THIS WEEK

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - UMES will play a pair of contests in the mid-week, coming home to face in-state rival UMBC on Wednesday at 3 p.m. at Hawks Stadium, then heading to Delaware to face Wilmington on Thursday at 3 p.m. at Jim Sherman Sr. Stadium.
The Hawks will play UMBC for the first time in 26 years. In 1987, the Retrievers defeated the Hawks in a doubleheader 3-2 and 25-1. UMES has not faced Wilmington since 1994, when the Wildcats won all three games against the Hawks 6-4, 7-1 and 6-2.
Both games will be broadcast on the Hawks Radio Network, but only the UMBC game will be on WGOP 540 AM. The Wilmington game will be broadcast online only.
UMES comes into Wednesday after falling in all three games to Delaware State over the weekend, standing at 5-24 overall and 2-7 in the MEAC. UMBC was defeated in two out of three games to Stony Brook last weekend and now sports a 7-11 record and 4-5 standing in the America East Conference. Wilmington, a member of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference, comes into the week at 20-9 overall and 8-1 in-conference. The Wildcats will play Chestnut Hill in a doubleheader on Tuesday before the game with UMES.

Currently he leads the team in many categories, including a .356 batting average, a .473 on-base percentage, 23 runs, eight hit by pitches, 13 walks and eight stolen bases. He also leads all regular starters with a .988 fielding percentage, committing just one error in 26 games.
LAST TIME OUT: UMES SWEPT BY DELAWARE STATE
UMES got swept in a three-game set in Dover to Route 13 rival Delaware State over the weekend. The Hawks fell in the first game 9-4 on Friday, then lost 12-0 and 17-5 in seven innings in the Saturday doubleheader.
Hitting safely in each contest, Mike Escanilla hit .417 (5-for-12) with a pair of runs scored. Byron Campbell reached base all three games and got three hits, including a home run to straight-away center field, in nine at bats with three runs scored.
SCHOTT ON THE JOHNNY BENCH AWARD WATCH LIST
Schott, the only player that plays in the state of Maryland or the MEAC to be nominated for the award, leads the team with a .348 batting average, 10 doubles and .493 slugging percentage. The two-time team captain also leads the team with three sacrifice flies and has brought home 16 runs so far this season.
Pedro Swann TAKES OVER AS UMES HEAD COACH
Swann brings a wealth of baseball experience to Princess Anne, playing in the professional ranks for 17 years from 1991 to 2007. He played for Delaware State from 1989-1991, earning all-conference honors all three years and hitting .421 with 26 home runs in his career.
NEW LOOK INFIELD PAYS DIVIDENDS
At the left side of the infield, two freshmen man the ranks with Connor Breslin, who earlier had a seven-game hitting streak and has a MEAC Rookie of the Week award, taking the hot corner and Mike Escanilla, who hit .333 against Delaware State this past weekend, serves as the squad's shortstop.
At second base, sophomore Joshua James returned to the position after playing in center field for the 16 games. James has hit safely in eight of his last 10 contests.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS:
The Retrievers plan to start rookie right-hander Riley Stephenson, who is 0-4 with a 10.97 ERA in 10.2 innings. Junior right-hander Jon Cohn is the team's top reliever, standing with a 2-1 record and 1.69 ERA in eight games, throwing 21.1 innings.
Wilmington comes into Tuesday hitting .289 as a squad. At third base, junior Josh Hampton bats .350 with 18 doubles, a home run and 24 RBI. With an on-base percentage of .440, senior outfielder Jordan Johnson hits .306 with 30 runs and 18 walks.
A starter has been been determined as of Monday, but possibles include junior southpaw Jamie Treml, who has a 4.19 ERA in 19.1 innings, and junior righty Jason Seitler, who is 16.1 innings has a 7.16 ERA.
