UMES OPENS AT HOME AGAINST CORNELL

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - The Hawks will play their first games in Princess Anne as they welcome Cornell for a pair of doubleheaders. Due to incoming inclement weather, the first games will be played on Friday at noon, followed by a second doubleheader on Sunday at noon at Hawks Stadium. Each doubleheader will begin with a nine-inning game followed by a seven-inning contest.
UMES comes in with a 0-7 record while Cornell will play its first games of the season this weekend.

Bethune-Cookman, the reigning conference champion, is predicted to win the MEAC and the MEAC Southern Division.
The divisions were formed this season after the addition of North Carolina Central and Savannah State to the MEAC. Teams will only play conference games against division opponents.
LAST TIME: HAWKS LOSE 3 IN BULLDOG CLASSIC
UMES competed in the Bulldog Classic in Huntsville, Alabama last weekend, falling in three games total to Alabama A&M 7-2, Indiana State 17-2 and Western Illinois 9-3. James Newsome went 4-for-12 combined in the three games, driving more two runs and scoring a pair more. In the first two games, Franklin Armstrong hit safely in each game plus drove home a run in both. Jesus Hernandez had the best start of the weekend for UMES, throwing five innings against Western Illinois with two runs allowed and three strikeouts.

SCOUTING THE OPPONENT:
The Big Red return eight of their nine position players that had a minimum of 24 starts last season. 2011 Honorable Mention All-Ivy senior shortstop Marshall Yanzick led the team with a .328 average last season, while starting outfielder Brian Billigen also was an all-conference honorable mention, hitting .292 with eight home runs, four triples and 11 stolen bases. Junior second baseman Brenton Peters hit .286 with seven doubles, having a 14-12 BB-K ratio.
Pitching is another story for Cornell, as third-year head coach Bill Walkenbach will need to replace all three of his primary starters from last season. The team's top returning pitcher is right-handed sophomore Connor Kaufmann, throwing 25 innings with a 1-1 record, 4.68 ERA and 16 strikeouts in `11. Senior right-hander Rick Marks went 0-3 with a 8.38 ERA in 12 relief appearances, but struck out 24 in 19.1 innings.
