PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – The University of Maryland Eastern Shore baseball team was represented well on the College Sports Madness MEAC Preseason All-Conference Teams as senior outfielder Stephen Bull (Millsboro, Del.) and sophomore shortstop Mike Escanilla (Waldorf, Md.) were each named to the second-team. The selections are the first of the year for the Hawks.

Escanilla was one of five infielders named to the second team. He claims the distinction after being only one of two players to start all 53 games for UMES in 2013. He anchored the shortstop position for UMES and led all rookies with a .265 averaged and 15 stolen bases. He had a seven-game hit streak from March 17-26 and had 12 RBI on the year.

Bull took the utility spot for the second team. He claims takes the distinction after hitting .309 with 30 runs and 13 RBI a year ago. The leadoff hitter led UMES with 15 multi-hit games in 2013 as he collected 11 extra base hits. Bull has been named to the MEAC Commissioner’s All-Academic Team in each of the past two seasons. He has been a mainstay in leftfield for UMES since his sophomore year.

North Carolina A&T’s Luke Tendler was predicted to be Field Player of the Year, while Montana Durapau was named Pitcher of the Year. Denathan Dukes of Norfolk State was selected to be Freshman of the Year, while Delaware State’s JP Blandin was predicted to be Coach of the Year. Delaware State had the most players named to the squads as the Hornets had six altogether with five of those on the first team

UMES travels to Tampa, Fla., to begin the regular season when the Hawks play at South Florida from Feb. 14-16. USF went 36-22 a year ago, including a 25-5 record at the USF Baseball Stadium. The Bulls nearly advanced to the NCAA Regionals but fell 2-1 to Rutgers in the Big East Championship game.
