FARGO, N.D. – The University of Maryland Eastern Shore baseball team’s all-time hits leader, Tre-von Johnson, has recently signed a professional contract to play for the Fargo-Moorhead Redhawks of the American Association of Professional Baseball. The East New Market, Md., native is the second UMES player to sign a professional contract in the past year and fifth overall since 2008. Johnson is also currently an assistant coach at UMES

“Tre-Von is an exciting player who got overlooked last year due to injury,” said Head Coach Doug Simonic. “He is looking to kick-start his professional career and we are excited to give him an opportunity in spring training.”

Fargo-Moorhead is a part of the American Association, which is a premier independent baseball league that features 12 teams spanning from Texas to Canada. The league has a plethora of alumni in Major League Baseball, including names such as Max Scherzer, Aaron Crow and Tanner Scheppers. The rosters include former MLB and MiLB players, as well as players with international experience and overlooked college graduates.

Currently, there are 10 alumni in the MLB and 46 players in the MiLB. The RedHawks are in the North Division of the league with the Winnipeg Goldeyes, St. Paul Saints and Sioux Falls Canaries. Last season, Fargo-Moorhead went 62-38 to win the division, before falling to the Gary-SouthShore RailCats in the semifinals.

Johnson is the all-time hits leader at UMES with 225 career hits. He earned All-MEAC Tournament Team honors in 2013 after he hit .625(5-of-8) with a pair of multi-hit games. Johnson also tallied 14 multi-hit and six multi-RBI games last season. The North Dorchester High School graduate hit .332 in 185 games in his four years as a Hawk. He had 33 doubles, six homers and held a .440 slugging-percentage. He was named to the All-MEAC Second Team in both his sophomore and junior years.

He will report to spring training with the RedHawks in late April.
