NORFOLK, Va. - Despite a masterful performance by Karim Gonzalez, who pitched a complete game with a career-high 11 strikeouts and just one earned run allowed, the Hawks were defeated by Bethune-Cookman 3-0 in the MEAC Tournament. UMES will play tonight against the winner of Delaware State and North Carolina A&T for a berth in the MEAC Championship game.

The Hawks drop to 14-38 on the season, while Bethune-Cookman goes to 33-24 and earns a berth in the MEAC Championship game.

Bethune-Cookman started MEAC Pitcher of the Year Rayan Gonzalez (9-1) against UMES. The Hawks got a couple of hits early in the first, with Byron Campbell (Waldorf, Md.) singling and James Newsome (Mechanicsville, Md.) following suit two batters later with a single to put first and second and two out, but Gonzalez got a strike out to end the inning.

Karim Gonzalez (Mexico City, Mexico) (1-6) had a strong bottom of the first, striking out three in four batters to begin the game.

Both pitchers kept the teams off the scoreboard, with Karim Gonzalez using inning-ending strikeouts in the second and fourth to keep runners in scoring position, as the score stayed 0-0 after four-and-a-half innings.

In the bottom of the fifth, Josh Johnson reached on a fielding error. Johnson stole second and took third on a bunt single by Brandon Turner, who reached second on a stolen base next at bat. David Lee followed with ground ball single up the middle to score both Johnson and Turner. Lee to advanced to second on a throw to the plate and got third on a ground out. Brashad Johnson hit a fly ball to center for a sacrifice fly, scoring Lee for a 3-0 Wildcats lead.

UMES attempted to come back, as Karim Gonzalez held the Wildcats without a hit in his final three innings of work, finishing with 11 strikeouts. But Rayan Gonzalez allow just one runner past first base all game, with Jordan Dailey pitching the ninth for BCU, to shut out the Hawks for the 3-0 game.

Rayan Gonzalez earns the victory with eight scoreless innings pitched, striking out seven. Dailey got his 11th save of the year after a unblemished ninth inning.

Karim Gonzalez got the loss, but pitched a complete game with eight innings thrown, allowing just three runs, only one earned, with 11 strikeouts, a career best and the top single game mark on the team this year.

Newsome led the Hawks with a 2-for-3 day for the cleanup spot. Campbell and Joshua James (Milford, Del.) also hit safely for UMES.

Lee finished with a 1-for-4 game with two RBI. Josh Johnson went 1-for-4 with a run scored and two stolen bases.

UMES will face the winner of Delaware State and North Carolina A&T next for a berth in the MEAC Championship game.
