Final Stats

DOVER, Del. - UMES battled with Delaware State on Sunday as the Hawks led after six-and-a-half, but a six-run eighth by the Hornets gave the home team a win over the Hawks 11-5. The Hawks fall to 8-42 overall and 4-20 in-conference while the Hornets go to 32-13 and 21-3 in the MEAC.

After DSU pieced together three singles and a walk to score a run in the second, Ryan Haas hit a two-run home run to right off UMES starter J.P. Black (Elkton, Md.) to make it 3-0 Hornets.

UMES got on the board in the following half-inning against DSU starter Elliott Gardner. Stephen Bull (Millsboro, Del.) led off with a walk and stole second two batters later. Tre-von Johnson (East New Market, Md.) reached on a throwing error by the shortstop, allowing Bull to score and making it 3-1 DSU.

In the sixth, UMES recovered after a double play to tie the game. After Mike Escanilla (Waldorf, Md.) lined a single to left and stole second on the next pitch, Johnson grounded a single through the left side to bring in Escanilla. Next batter, Byron Campbell (Waldorf, Md.) crushed a ball to deep right-center for a double, scoring Johnson to tie the game at 3-3.

The Hawks took the lead in the seventh. Jeffrey Fleetwood (Delmar, Del.) led off with a single. Two batters later, Joshua James (Milford, Del.) bunted a single to third and advanced on a throwing error by the third baseman to put two in scoring position. Connor Breslin (Saylorsburg, Pa.) grounded the ball to third to score Fleetwood for a 4-3 UMES advantage.



Haas hit another two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh, pushing DSU back in front 5-4.

In the top of the eighth, Campbell walked with one away. Following, Brandon Schott (Warren, Pa.) hit a double to the left-center gap to score Campbell and tie the game at 5-5. Derek Marshallsea (3-3) finished the inning for DSU.

The Hornets put the game out of reach in the bottom of the eighth, combining seven hits and a pair of walks to score six runs, giving Delaware State the 11-5 win.

Neither starter got a decision in the game. Black went 6.1 innings, allowing five runs, just four earned. For the Hornets, Gardner pitched 6.2 innings with four runs and five strikeouts.

Marshallsea earned the win in relief, going two-thirds of an inning with a pair of strikeouts and no runs. The loss went to Jordan Bone (Pittston, Pa.) (0-6), who had two runs, just one earned, in two-thirds of an inning.

Campbell reached base twice in the contest, going 1-for-3 with a walk, run and RBI. Breslin also got the reach twice, hitting 1-for-3 with a walk and an RBI ground out.

Leading the Hornets was Haas, who finished with a 3-for-5 day with a pair of home runs, three runs and four RBI. Chris Rivera concluded with a 4-for-5 contest, a run and an RBI.

UMES will take on George Mason on Tuesday at 4 p.m. in Fairfax for the first of two weekday games this week.
