NORFOLK, Virginia The Hawks baseball team traveled to Virginia to battle the Spartans in the hopes of gaining ground in the MEAC North. But Norfolk State had other plans, sweeping Saturday’s (Apr. 14) doubleheader at  Marty L. Miller Field. The Spartans won the opener 10-2 and the nightcap 8-6.

Freshman Dillon Oxyer (Pasadena, Maryland) collected three hits over the two games to lead the team, and junior Joey Nicastro (New Market, Maryland) added three RBI’s. Seniors Isaiah Chambers (Bowie, Maryland), Jamison Trower (Chesterfield, Virginia), Tyler Friis (Appleton, Wisconsin) and sophomore Blake Coleman (Woodbridge, Virginia) collected multi-hit games.

On the mound, sophomore Marty Tolson, Jr. (Stafford, Virginia) allowed one earned run over 5 2/3 innings of work in game one. In game two freshman Chris Levere (King George, Virginia) added two frames of scoreless relief.

The Spartans (12-19, 9-5 MEAC) took the first contest in convincing fashion, leading 8-0 after three innings. Nicastro’s RBI grounder and Chambers’ RBI bunt helped the Hawks (7-28, 4-10 MEAC) climb back in it before a pair of runs sealed the game for Norfolk State.

Maryland Eastern Shore got on the board first in game two, with another Nicastro RBI and a sacrifice fly from sophomore Dwayne Marshall (Piscataway, New Jersey). Norfolk State countered with two runs in the first inning to tie the score.

A double by junior Dominic DeBlasie (Tilton, New Hampshire) gave the Hawks the lead again in the third but the Spartans countered to tie again. Nicastro’s third RBI came in the fourth to spark a two run rally in the fourth. After 4 ½ innings the Hawks had built a 6-3 lead, but Justin Hayes from Norfolk State belted a grand slam in the bottom of the fifth to give his Spartans the sweep.

The series finale is scheduled for Sunday (Apr. 15) at noon.
