Final Stats

NORFOLK, Va. - UMES led after scoring first in the sixth, helped by a strong start from Jordan Bone, but the Hawks fell to Norfolk State 6-2 in the Sunday rubber match. UMES drops to 6-32 and 3-12 in-conference while the Spartans improve to 13-20 and 8-7 in the MEAC.

The game started as a pitching duel between UMES starter Bone (Pittston, Pa.) and NSU starter Justin Bhatti. Neither side scored in the first five innings as Bone allowed just two hits and Bhatti gave up just one hit in that time.

In the sixth, Stephen Bull (Millsboro, Del.) led off with a single and took second on a fielding error. With one out, Tre-von Johnson (East New Market, Md.) sacrificed himself on a bunt to get Bull to third. Next batter, Byron Campbell (Waldorf, Md.) crushed a ball to left-center for a double, bringing in Bull for the first run of the game. After Jeffrey Fleetwood (Delmar, Del.) walked, Brandon Schott (Warren, Pa.) lined a single to center to score Campbell and give UMES a 2-0 lead.

The Spartans responded in the next half-inning. NSU got first and third with one away against bone. Cameron Day singled to right to score Chase Kyriacou for the team's first run. After Kyle Vaas walked to load the bases, Bernard Parker (Waldorf, Md.) (2-3) entered the game in relief on the mound. Tyon Ore grounded to third as Connor Breslin (Saylorsburg, Pa.) threw out Zach Markel at home. Parker induced another ground out next batter to finish the inning with UMES in the lead 2-1.



On a single, walk and sacrifice bunt, the Spartans got second and third with one out in the bottom of the seventh. Cody Ellis pinch hit at this point and hit a sacrifice fly to right to tie the game. With Markel batting, Andre Moore advance from second to third on a failed pickoff attempt, then took home on a wild pitch to push NSU ahead. Markel singled and scored next batter on a Cameron Day triple to make the score 4-2 Norfolk State.

The Spartans added two more in the eighth on a Justin Lee RBI single and a Mikey Bruno sacrifice fly to go up 6-2.

The Hawks did not get a base runner in the final inning and fell to the Spartans 6-2.

Neither starter got a decision in the game. Bone went 5.1 innings, striking out a career-high four batters and allowing just one run. Bhatti pitched six innings, finishing with two runs charged and nine strikeouts.

Reliever Ray Morton (3-2) earned the victory, pitching the final three innings and allowing one hit and no runs. Parker got the loss with three runs in 1.1 innings.

Increased his reached base streak to 35 games, Campbell went 2-for-3 with a walk, a run and an RBI. Schott reached base twice, going 1-for-3 with a walk and an RBI.

For the Spartans, Day finished 4-for-4 with two RBI. Markel and Killian Strenn each got two hits, the former adding a walk and a pair of runs.

UMES will return home for a Tuesday game against Navy at 3 p.m. at Hawks Stadium.
