PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - UMES tried to build momentum after a two-run seventh, but the Hawks fell to Norfolk State 8-2 in the rubber game of the MEAC series on Sunday. The Hawks fall to 5-19 overall and 2-4 in-conference while the Spartans go to 7-15 this season and 2-4 in the MEAC.

Norfolk State repeated got base runners against UMES starter Jordan Bone (Pittston, Pa.) (0-1), scoring an unearned run in the first, second and fourth to begin the game.

In the top of the fifth, the Spartans loaded the bases with no outs. Jeffrey Fleetwood (Delmar, Del.) threw out Cameron Day at the plate on a Robert Barefoot fielder's choice, but a following Robert Reaume RBI single pushed the Spartans up 4-0. Bone got the next batter to foul out while Bernard Parker (Waldorf, Md.) came in with two away and struck out Justin Lee to end the inning with no further damage.

UMES tried to strike back in the bottom of the fifth, getting the bases loaded with one out on three free passes against NSU starter Justin Bhatti (1-4). But Bhatti induced two fly outs and the Hawks could not score.

Next inning, Byron Campbell (Waldorf, Md.) led off with a line drive single to right to extend his reached base streak to 21 games. Bhatti retired the next three batters to keep the Hawks without a run.

With one out in the top of the seventh, consecutive RBI singles by Chase Kyriacou and Zach Markel pushed the Spartans up 6-0.

The Hawks finally got on the board in the bottom of the seventh. With one away, Joshua James (Milford, Del.) and Thomas Gray (Delmar, Del.) walked. Stephen Bull (Millsboro, Del.) powered a double to left, scoring two runs to make it 6-2 NSU.

UMES did not get closer in the game, with the Spartans adding two more in the top of the ninth off a Markel RBI single and a Kyle Vaas sacrifice fly for an 8-2 lead, the eventual final score.

Bhatti earned the victory, going six-and-a-third with seven strikeouts and two runs charged. Despite allowing just one earned run, Bone got the loss, going 4.2 innings with four runs total and two strikeouts.
