Final Stats

DURHAM, N.C. - In the battle of the Maroon and Grey, UMES took down North Carolina Central 7-1 in Durham for its first win of the year. The Hawks go to 1-19 while the Eagles go to 3-19 after this non-conference matchup.

In the top of the second, Brandon Schott (Warren, Pa.) reached second on an error by the left fielder. Jeffrey Fleetwood (Delmar, Del.) was walked by Eagles starter Glenn Frye (1-4) two batters later to put runners on first and second with two outs. Joshua James (Milford, Del.) singled to score Schott and give UMES a 1-0 lead.

UMES came on strong in the third against reliever Jasper Jones, with Stephen Bull (Millsboro, Del.) and Byron Campbell (Waldorf, Md.) drawing leadoff walks. James Newsome (Mechanicsville, Md.) doubled down the left field line, getting an RBI with another run off an error by the left fielder. Two batters later, Tre-Von Johnson (East New Market, Md.) doubled to left-center to score Newsome, capping a three-run inning and putting UMES up 4-0.

The Hawks were not done as in the next inning, Shaquille Bagwell (Atlantic, Va.) led off with a single, advancing to second on the next at bat. Campbell followed up with an RBI single to center to score Bagwell. Campbell stole second and scored two batters later after Schott reached on an error by the shortstop. UMES led 6-0 by the end of the fourth.

In his first start of the season, Bernard Parker (Waldorf, Md.) (1-0) kept the Eagles down, allowing just two hits in his five-inning start with four strikeouts. His scoreless outing dropped his ERA to 3.95.



NCCU got a run in the bottom of the sixth, scoring Luis Diaz as Tyson Simpson reached on an error by the left fielder with two outs, giving the Eagles their only score of the game.

Fleetwood tacked on a run in the top of the ninth for UMES, hitting an RBI single to right to score Johnson, returning the lead to six runs and setting the eventual final score, 7-1 Hawks.

The UMES pitching staff of Parker, Michael Epps (Pottstown, Pa.), Zachary Saca (Elk Grove, Calif.) and Karim Gonzalez (Mexico City, Mexico) combined to allow zero earned runs and five hits in the game. Epps had an unearned run after pitching the sixth, Saca had a scoreless seventh, and Gonzalez threw the final two innings with a strikeout.

Newsome went 2-for-5 including a triple, double, a run scored and two RBI. Johnson had a pair of doubles and stolen bases in a 3-for-5 night. Fleetwood reached base all five times he appeared at the plate, hitting a pair of singles and walking three times.

Frye got the loss for NCCU, allowing a run in the first two innings with two strikeouts. Jones allowed five runs in the third and fourth combined, striking out one. Nate Smith led the Eagles with a 2-for-4 game.

UMES heads back to Princess Anne for its first home conference series this weekend, taking on Route 13 rival Delaware State for a Saturday doubleheader starting at noon.
