PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - Despite multi-hit days from Brandon Schott and Connor Breslin and a good relief outing from Zachary Saca, UMES fell to Monmouth 8-2 on Tuesday at Hawks Stadium. UMES falls to 4-16 this season while Monmouth improves to 6-8.

After a two-out Jake Gronsky triple, Chris Perret reached on an fielding error, allowing a run to score in the top of the first. After Craig Sweeney singled and later stole second to put second and third, Joe Bamford hit a two-run single to right off UMES starter Tyler Witte (Westminster, Md.) (0-1) to make it 3-0 Monmouth.

UMES got a run back in the second inning against Monmouth starter Anthony Ciavarella. Malik Wylie (Bronx, N.Y.) walked and got to second on a ground out. Next batter, Joshua James (Milford, Del.) lined a single to center, scoring Wylie and getting UMES on the scoreboard.

Monmouth responded in the following half-inning with three runs, capped by a two-run single by Owen Stewart, to get a 6-1 lead after two-and-a-half.

Witte, in his first start since April, retired the side in order and pitched two-thirds in the fifth. Saca (Elk Grove, Calif.) finished the fifth in relief with a ground out and went through the sixth and seventh one-two-three.

In the bottom of the seventh, UMES tried to come back in the game. Mike Escanilla (Waldorf, Md.) led off with a ground ball single up the middle and later stole second. With two out, Schott (Warren, Pa.) blasted a ball to deep left off Monmouth reliever Jeff Paglione (1-0) for an RBI double and bringing the Hawks within four 6-2. Wylie walked and Breslin (Saylorsburg, Pa.) singled to load the bases, but Stephen Frey came in to pitch for Monmouth and induced a ground out to end the inning.

UMES was not able to muster another hit in the game as Monmouth put two more run on the board in the ninth off a Sweeney RBI triple and a Bamford RBI single off UMES pitcher Devin Repine (Salisbury, Md.) to go up 8-2, the eventual final score.

Pagilone went 3.2 innings in his start with one run allowed. Paglione earned the win in relief with three innings pitched, giving up one run and striking out four. Frey got a save after pitching 2.1 flawless innings.
