NORFOLK, Va. - Despite holding the home team to just four hits on Sunday, UMES fell to Norfolk State 5-2 to finish the series. The Hawks fall to 0-3 in the MEAC and 0-19 overall, while the Spartans go to 3-3 in conference play, 5-12 overall.

Tre-Von Johnson (East New Market, Md.) reached first on a fielding error in the top of the second. Franklin Armstrong (Trenton, N.J.) followed with a double down the third base line to bring in Johnson and give UMES a 1-0 lead. Three batters later, Shaquille Bagwell (Atlantic, Va.) singled up the middle, scoring Armstrong for a 2-0 UMES advantage.

In the first three innings, UMES starter Jesus Hernandez (Haverstraw, N.Y.) (0-2) held Norfolk State to just one hit with no runs and a strikeout.

Things got tough in the bottom of the fourth for UMES. Cameron Day led off for the Spartans with a single followed by a Tyon Ore single and Ryan Montgomery hit-by-pitch. Day scored next batter on a wild pitch, with James Essex walking to reload the bases. Next batter, Ross Cardwell reached on a fielding error by the shortstop, with two more runs scoring on a subsequent fielding error by the left fielder. Cardwell later scored on a wild pitch, giving Norfolk State a 5-2 lead.

While the Hawks tried to come back, Zachary Saca (Elk Grove, Calif.) came in to pitch in relief, going 1-2-3 in the fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth innings against Norfolk State to cap the Spartans at five runs scored in the game.

In the top of the fifth, Stephen Bull (Millsboro, Del.) singled up the middle to increase his hit streak to seven games, but UMES could not score in the inning.

UMES tried to come back in the game, getting at least two runners on base in the final four innings. But the Spartans pitching, with starter Justin Bhatti (2-2) and reliever Chris Horne, was too strong for the Hawks as Norfolk State held on for the 5-2 win.

The win went to Bhatti, who pitched seven innings with two runs and five strikeouts for Norfolk State, with Horne getting the save with the last two innings thrown and three strikeouts.

Hernandez got the loss with 3.1 innings, allowing five runs, just four earned, with a strikeout. Saca finished with 4.2 innings of scoreless relief, allowing just one base-runner.

Bull reached base three times with a 2-for-4 day plus a walk. Armstrong went 1-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Johnson scored a run, but snapped his six-game hit streak with an 0-for-4 game.

Norfolk State was led by Day, who went 3-for-4 with a run scored. Ore got the only other hit for the Spartans, going 1-for-4 with a run.

UMES will head south to North Carolina to take on Elizabeth City State on Tuesday, March 20th for a 2:00 p.m. game.
