SALISBURY, Maryland -- Sunday's (Mar. 11) contest between Maryland Eastern Shore and NJIT was a tight battle. But despite The Shore's rally, NJIT scored some late runs to win 5-2, earning a sweep against the Hawks.

Maryland Eastern Shore falls to 1-13 for the year, and their losing streak now stands at six.

The Highlanders scored three times in the second inning, but Hawks sophomore starter Marty Tolson, Jr. (Stafford, Virginia) settled in after that, striking out four hitters along the way. The Shore's offense was held off the board until the seventh when senior Tyler Friis (Appleton, Wisconsin) betled a two RBI single.

In the eighth, freshman Jordan Torres (Brooklyn, New York) made it to second base but the Hawks were unable to score him. NJIT added insurance in the ninth, then quieted any hopes of a final rally with a game ending double play.

Additional top performers for the Hawks include a 2-for-2 game from junior Dominic DeBlasie (Tilton, New Hampshire) and three scoreless out of the bullpen from senior Chris Melrath (Rising Sun, Maryland). Senior Isaiah Chambers (Bowie, Maryland) delivered a single up the middle and came home on Friis' single.

The Hawks will host two Maryland teams this week at Perdue Stadium. Navy comes to town Wednesday (Mar. 14), followed by the MEAC opener with Coppin State over the weekend (Mar. 17-18).
