SALISBURY, Maryland -- Maryland Eastern Shore battled ferociously in game one of today's doubleheader with NJIT, but it wasn't enough as the Hawks lost both games, 8-4 and 7-0 at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium.

Senior Jamison Trower (Chesterfield, Virginia) busted out of his early struggles with a 3-for-3 opening game that included a two-run home run. Fellow senior Tyler Friis (Appleton, Wisconsin) also chipped in three hits during the doubleheader.

The efforts of the senior class carried over to the mound. Toby Hoskins (North East, Maryland) pitched 6 2/3 innings and allowed just one earned run, and Chris Melrath (Rising Sun, Maryland) added two innings in relief. Evan Bertone (Douglas, Massachusetts) settled in after a rough second inning in game two, but was still saddled with the loss.

Trower's shot in the first gave the Hawks a 2-0 lead, which NJIT seized in the third with a three run inning. The lead would extend to 5-2 for the Highlanders before Trower scored in the fourth and Friis drove home freshman Dillon Oxyer (Pasadena, Maryland) in the fifth, cutting the deficit to one.

Maryland Eastern Shore battled to tie the score but came up short. NJIT plated three runs in the seventh inning to finish off the win.

In game two, the Highlanders' Tyler Stafflinger delivered a two hit shutout, and NJIT added seven runs of offense to win convincingly.

The series concludes Sunday (Mar. 11) at noon at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium.
