PLYMOUTH MEETING, Pa. - Despite the Maroon and Gray having a two-run inning to give the Hawks a 4-3 lead into the bottom of the seventh, Villanova used six unanswered runs to defeat UMES 9-4 on Friday. The Hawks fall to 0-12 while Villanova goes to 8-5.

Villanova's second batter in the first, Kevin Wager, hit an RBI single off Hawks starter Jacob Foreman (Little Orleans, Md.) to score Marlon Calbi. Two batters later, Wager scored from a Connor Jones infield single to give the home team a 2-0 lead.

In the third, Brandon Schott (Warren, Pa.) led off with a triple into left field. The next pitch, with Thomas Gray (Delmar, Del.) batting, Villanova starter Tyler Radtke threw a wild pitch, allowing Schott to score. The Hawks trailed 2-1.

Next inning, UMES tied the game. After James Newsome (Mechanicsville, Md.) got hit by a pitch with two outs, Franklin Armstrong (Trenton, N.J.) brought him home with a triple, tying the score at two.

Matt Fleishman responded in the bottom of the fourth with a solo home run to right to give the Wildcats a 3-2 advantage.

Both sides stayed were quiet until the top of the seventh. Jeffrey Fleetwood (Delmar, Del.) reached on an error and was pushed to second on a sacrifice bunt by Schott. Gray followed with an RBI single up the middle, his third RBI hit of the year, to tie the game. After Shaquille Bagwell (Atlantic, Va.) walked and Stephen Bull (Millsboro, Del.) struck out, Byron Campbell (Waldorf, Md.) singled against Matt Lengel (2-0) to score Gray and give UMES its first lead of the game 4-3. Campbell increased his hitting streak to five games with that single.



Foreman left the game after six innings, allowing three runs, just two earned, with six strikeouts, eventually getting a no decision. Three times Foreman retired the side in order.

In the bottom half of the seventh, Villanova tied the game at four after Jordan Zach advanced to home on a throw after a Calbi single.

With a tie game going into the bottom of the eighth, the Wildcats took the lead for good with five runs scored in the inning, including four straight RBI plate appearances, to eventually win 9-4.

The loss went to James Smith (Florence, S.C.) (0-2), who had five runs in 1.1 innings of relief.

Villanova starter Radtke got a no decision with 6.1 innings pitched, allowing four runs with five strikeouts. Lengel won the game with 1.2 relief innings, striking out three.

Gray had his best hitting day as a Hawk, going 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI. Armstrong reached base twice going 1-for-3 with a walk and an RBI. Despite getting on base twice via hit-by-pitch, Newsome's four game hit streak ended after going 0-for-2.

Fleishman led the Wildcats with three hits in four at bats, including a solo home run. Wager went 2-for-4 with a pair of runs and RBI.

UMES will play another Philadelphia-based opponent, Temple, in Ambler at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday.
